Vieux Carré Recipe
Named after New Orleans’s French Quarter (a.k.a. Vieux Carré), this drink is as representative of the city as the neighborhood. And, like the French Quarter, it’s strong, fun, and a little bit crazy.
What to buy: Bénédictine D.O.M., a golden liqueur first produced by Benedictine monks in the 16th century, adds a sweet, aromatic flavor to cocktails. It can be found at well-stocked liquor stores.
- 1 ounce rye whiskey
- 1 ounce Cognac
- 3/4 ounce sweet vermouth
- 1/4 ounce Bénédictine D.O.M.
- 2 dashes Peychaud's Bitters
- 2 dashes angostura bitters
- Ice
- Lemon twist, for garnish
- Combine whiskey, Cognac, vermouth, Bénédictine D.O.M., and bitters in a cocktail mixer, and fill with ice. Stir until chilled through, then strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Garnish with a lemon twist and serve.
- Or mix ingredients in a DOF glass, and add ice. Stir until chilled through. Garnish with a lemon twist and serve.
