Slaves to Convenience

Comments

Like a modern day (and West Coast) George Plimpton, participatory journalism - or whatever you call it - seems to be your milieu. And I see that along with your appreciation of wine you also possess an affinity for caffeinated beverages. There may be a Food Network show lurking in there somewhere too - wherein you travel among the artisanal wine makers of the region trashing the industry behemoths... Oh, that's right, Gallo's a sponsor. Never mind. A book perhaps. Have you ever read Feeding Frenzy (Stuart Stevens)?

Rather than disparaging guests that spend $8 per bottle why not manage your time better and shop in a quality wine store?
Or reflect some modicum of dignity and explain there was nothing fitting to bring along in the local 'supermarket'

The initial insult was not searching further for those flowers - nothing says 'I don't give a damn' like shopping at the corner store - don't blame the wine!

I think Duane missed the point when he complained that he'd "...rather drink beer." The bottle you bring as a gift is just that, a gift. More thought should be involved than hitting a convenience store for a present. What's next? Christmas gifts from 7-11?

I agree with the other replies, was this a spur of the moment dinner party/barbecue? I don't think so. I would never think of going to a convenience store for a dinner party gift. And if for some odd chance I did have to resort to a convenience store, I would make it fun. Maybe SPAM and Twinkies, or better yet, grab a few pints of Ben and Jerry's, some Hersey's chocolate syrup and some a few bags of Milanos. It doesn;t take much effort to be a bit more prepared or creative, Duane. Anybody can knock a bodega for the cheap wine it has, but it takes a consciencious person to walk away with true gifts.

What do you think?
