Cake Stands

Elevate any dish to a
new level

By Michele Foley

Whether it’s a wedding or a birthday, chances are you’ve got a special cake to go with the celebration. Give it a proper stage on one of these pedestals. You can also use a cake stand to turn an ordinary breakfast into an event by covering one with scones and muffins.

SIGNATURE NOW & THEN CAKE STAND, $25

Made of earthenware and done in the style of "shabby chic," this stand comes in seven colors—from olive to goldenrod—and is dishwasher safe.

LARGE HOBNAIL GLASS CAKE PLATE, $30

During the early 20th century, milk glass was known as the poor man’s porcelain. Today it’s a collectible, and L.E. Smith’s original hobnail (a classic design with a raised dot pattern) is no exception. Last manufactured in the 1960s, these hand-molded stands are now back in production due to overwhelming demand.

ROSANNA SKIRTED AND SCALLOPED PEDESTALS, $30–$35

These stands—made of stoneware and dishwasher safe—would be right at home in both a Baroque setting next to gold flatware or at your next goth party.

PRETTY IN PINK CERAMIC CAKE STAND, $32.95

We think this low-standing pedestal would be perfect for holding cupcakes.

POTLUCK STUDIOS RUFFLED CAKE STAND, $35–$55

It’s no surprise that this stand comes from a line called Flirt. But it isn't just about good looks: All ceramics from Potluck Studios are made with nontoxic glazes.

PEDESTAL CAKE PLATTER, $36.95

This stand, reminiscent of highly-sought-after Depression-era glass, comes with a dome to discourage your friends from sampling the frosting.

CREAM CAKE STAND, $64.99

We love the cutouts along the border of this pedestal: They make it look like a modern doily. Others will like the Victorian-style dome, which could almost double as the cake itself.

SQUARE CAKE STAND, $68–$89

The shape of this earthenware stand—made in Italy—adds a twist to any tabletop but still works nicely with round cakes.

EVE MEDIUM CAKE STAND, $150

Juliska’s glass pieces are mouth-blown at a site just outside Prague, a process that makes for a delicate, one-of-a-kind product. This stand is also lead free, and must be hand washed.

BIJOUX CAKE STANDS, $180–$300

All the stands from Clara French Ceramiques are made to order in the loveliest Easter egg palette imaginable. And if you can’t afford the hefty price tag, don’t worry: The two sisters who run the studio will rent out the cake stands for $50 to $100 per week.

I love cake and unfortunately I do not have a cake stand to display them. These have given me some great ideas of where to start looking for one.

Nice! I've also had great success with ebay for building my cake stand collection. They take up space, but it's easy to get creative with how to display them. The hobnail remains my favorite.

What a gorgeous collection! I also use cakes stands to raise up dishes of food to make more table space for additional dishes on a crowded buffet table.

I love cake stands. I'm glad I'm not the only one who collects them.

take your ateco cake stand to an auto body shop and have them custom paint it

All look good!
But one work-around I use is to place cakes on my cheese-board. No so much height, but the dimensions work and I like the natural style. And less cupboard-clutter!

for a cake stand in a hurry go to the dollar store pick out a nice plate clear or not, and a flat topped candle holder. crazy glued together will save lots of moola
