Julia Child is still beloved, not just for her ability to make French cooking accessible to Americans but also for her humor and strength. There’s a whole new generation of people who admire her, as both a chef and a public figure who embraced her imperfections and was always herself. In 2004, at a memorial at Napa’s Copia after her death, the tributes to Julia—from people of all ages and experience—were full of personal recollection; a few of the quotes below were taken from that event. Yeah, some of them are hearsay. But for a woman who lives so large in the public memory, potential apocrypha comes naturally. Consider this the beginnings of our virtual altar.
