Road-Food Rocker

Alex Kapranos discusses Sound Bites, his collection of essays about eating on tour

By James Norton

Illustration by Kapranos’s friend and Franz Ferdinand touring drummer Andrew Knowles.

Rock stars are known more for dabbling in amateur pharmacology than for writing essay collections. That would make Alex Kapranos an anomaly. The Franz Ferdinand frontman talked to us about eating on tour, the sinister appeal of gutting animals, and Sound Bites (Fig Tree, 2006), his new book of musings on road food.

James Norton is the founding editor of Flak Magazine and the author of Saving General Washington. He lives in Minneapolis with his wife, Becca Dilley, and writes about food for publications including Salon and Minnesota Monthly. His Supertaster column appears every Monday.
