We get more requests for cocktail-party food than anything else. What do you serve guests who are coming over for drinks? Well, cheese, of course, and olives, and maybe some beautiful prosciutto wrapped around melon. But we wanted to offer more. So we asked some of our favorite chefs and caterers across the country for the hors d’oeuvres that are their crowd-pleasers, the ones people climb over each other to get to, the ones never left over at the end of the party. The ones, in other words, that are killer. Their recipes are on the following pages.
Warning: Some of these recipes are time consuming. Depending on your schedule, you may want to choose among them for one party. (We’ve rated them for difficulty from 1 to 3: 1 is easiest, and 3 is hardest.)
Recipes by Stephen Gibbs, Dana Williams and Daniel Flores, Richard Crocker, V. Jaime Hamlin, and Marc Alvarez. Drinks by Nick Mautone. Photos by formula z/s.

I love that there are images when I roll-over the recipes.
Very cool so far! Good job, guys! :)
I'm going to try the sesame shrimp appetizer for a party next week. The picture looks great and the recipes looks very simple.
good luck - love the roll overs, will tell buddies and foodie friends - THANKS -- Tony
I love the website. The layout is great.
Is there an "ask the expert" area for all my hard cooking questions? I cannot make white beans correctly.
-Cheryl (San Francisco)
Love the fact that the pics of the recipe pop-up as you roll over (as others have stated), but the pics look like they're done with a disposable flash camera. To me, it looks amateur and univiting.
brilliant. at the risk of being mind-numbingly repetitive, the rollover pictures are perfect.
excellent. love the pictures
The eggplant and hummus recipe should be excellent for bringing my chickpea-fearing friends over to the dark side. Bwa ah ah.
Great pictures for us visual foodies, makes you really want to make the recipes
Who knew being a 'hound could be even more fun? Love the new site. The other food/recipe sites I have bookmarked never keep my interest enough to draw me back. I am really looking forward to how this sitedevelops!
Great recipes, and I love the rollover pictures as well. They can be time consuming to make, so I've found a great cheat. There's a company in Chicago www.menuinspirations.com that makes pre-made appetizers by hand. I've also done that
Horrible photography, but great recipes.
The idea of rollover photos is very useful, and clever, but the images themselves aren't great. I can't tell what the stuff really looks like. You need some more close-ups.
I too love the photo pop ups when I scroll to the recipes.
I love the picture, the recipes...great layout. Can't wait to see more!
For those of us who actually navigated through the entire site, how about putting those clever roll-over on all of the receipes in the site, not just the front page.
Compelling site. I'm having a lot of fun going through it!
This is great. I love the little tidbits and trivia. Looking forward to "the real thing" although this looks very nice. Easy to follow and find. Thanks.
Rollovers are great - as is the difficulty rating of the recipes. Perhaps a bold-faced statement that some items can be made ahead of time would be helpful. That's my best party food trick - do it all the day before.
who is doing the photography for the rollover images? having the images there is great, but they are kind of small and not the most flattering photographs of possibly amazing dishes. anyhow, i enjoy watching the site unfold.
looks great!
really great, but is this a rehash of an old story that ran LAST SUMMER?!
Appetizers aren't really time-sensitive, aklein. We floated this up to the front page again so people can have another look...
I can understand that ... good idea ... just had high hopes for fresh material, that's all
I hear ya. There's plenty more to come!
I've tried the endive/blue cheese/pecan combo before with wild success, but the roasted figs take it to a whole new level!
