»Best Food in Wakefield

5 stars

As a college student, I am very tight on money. But I am more than willing to shell out a couple extra dollars for this food. It is by far the best BBQ I have ever had. Dana, the star of the show, is more than willing to help you decide on what you're thinking about eating. Go to this place if you already haven't, you won't regret it. Was just hoping for something decent so I wouldn't have to drive so far for a BBQ fix (being a foodie not willing to settle for the usual fare that passes for BBQ in MA and frankly even Red Bones and Blue Ribbon while decent are really not all that amazing when it comes to their pork ribs, red bones beef ribs are a different story, very good).
So I placed an order that allowed me to sample the wings, the fried chicken, the ribs, and a variety of sauces, and a few of their sides.
As it was my first time there I paid particular attention to the cleanliness of the place (always a real indication of what the owners think of their customers) and was happy to see that everything looked super clean,
The really good news is that their ribs are the best I have ever tasted bar one small one man roadside BBQ barrel in the south, and it was close! I always like to first experience ribs without sauce so that you can tell if the quality is there in the meat or if it is just the sauce that is good. Well in this case the meat is delicious even without the sauce just with the dry rub that they do. Very tender and moist with just enough fat to give it a delicious flavor but not so much that you felt at all greasy and heavy. The ribs were firm but somehow still super tender and succulent. Masterful job of BBQing!
The sauces were all very good but the garlic BBQ sauce really stood out and on top of what was already very good BBQ it just popped and we couldn't get enough of it. The Honey BBQ was good too, not too sweet and the spicy sauce was also very good. The ribs alone are enough to keep us coming back again and again through the cold winter.
The Fried chicken was also good with the meat being very juicy and flavorful (none of that bland battery chicken and pork being used at this place, at least it doesn't taste like it) . My only qualm was that the batter, while good and herbed and also not too heavy, was not quite as crispy as I usually like but that might have had to do with the fact that it was in its take out box for about an hour before we ate it. Still good and certainly far above local average for fried chicken in terms of fresh clean not too greasy nor salty taste (my guess is that they change the oil they fry in very regularly compared to most places where the chicken tastes as if it has been fried in oil that hasn't been changed in days if not weeks) with real chicken flavor, just wanted more of a crunch to it.
Wings were good, also with very good flavor to the meat itself. Nice and plump and juicy, no broken bones and again not greasy just bursting with flavor. Buffalo sauce has a nice bite and also tasted fresh, not full of preservatives and salt.
Mac and cheese was delicious with mac that was not so overcooked to be pasty but still tasted like properly cooked pasta in its own right, and the cheese was not the squeezable ultra processed yellow liquid but stuff that was actually recognizable as cheese and tasted of good quality. Different, but very good and with quality ingredients (seems to be a pattern).
Sausage sandwich was good on a toasted bun and the sausage was nicely spiced but a little too salty for my taste but if that were all I was having it would have been fine.
The greens are not really my thing but my wife who likes them and has had them all over the country said they were very good.
They had a cornbread and sausage stuffing that was rather delectable and very rich that is definitely worth trying.
Didn't get the baked beans but wish I had as their aroma was intoxicating when I went in for pick up! Next time.
The people who served me were just lovely and so friendly, and it must be contagious because even the customers in there seemed friendly and said hello to me. Such a pleasant experience when so many seem to take the attitude that they are doing you a favor serving you!
It is a little pricey at $23 for a full slab (12 ribs) but I bet they pay more for their meat than most places, the quality of the basic ingredients is so evident in the taste at this place so its worth it to me.
I was so happy after tasting the food that i did something I haven't done in years and called them up to tell them just how fantastic I thought their product was.
Thankfully they have saved me from having to drive in to town to get decent BBQ.
Now if they just added red beans and rice to their menu it would really be the perfect go to BBQ place, as it is they are pretty darn close and the ribs really are superlative and the reason to go back again and again. I know I will be :)-COLLAPSE

This place really is the best BBQ in the greater Boston area. If you're geographically located north of Boston, then you need to eat this food at least once. You won't regret it. That's all I have to say about it.-COLLAPSE

I just noticed this place, on Vernon Street where it meets Water Street today and decided to pick up some dinner.

I just noticed this place, on Vernon Street where it meets Water Street today and decided to pick up some dinner.

It's a tiny place, takeout only. The owners are very friendly, especially Dana who seemed to be running the kitchen. Prices are a bit high (1 pint of pulled pork was $10.95, a pint of sausage cornbread stuffing was $7.95) but I don't mind paying a bit more for good quality food, especially BBQ which is so lacking in this area.

The pulled pork cames with a choice of Spicy BBQ sauce or Honey BBQ sauce, which comes on the side. The pork is very nice, moist and smoky and just fine without a sauce, IMO. However the Spicy BBQ sauce did work really well. I wish they'd also offer a vinegar sauce for a more North Carolina taste.

The Sausage Cornbread Stuffing was also very nice. It could have used more sausage, or perhaps more porky tasting sausage, and I think at that price I probably won't order it again soon, although I'll definitely be back for more pulled pork and to try the ribs and fried chicken. They offer a number of other sides as well, including macaroni and cheese. I don't think I saw a website mentioned on their takeout menu. I believe they are open Tuesday-Saturday, perhaps Sunday as well. It's on the menu and I'll post it later when I have that in hand.-COLLAPSE
