»San Rafael: Golden Orb - Warm spinach parmesan donuts. Wonderful !!! ... so worth the two block drive off the 101 exit

5 stars

I bought two types of these savory donuts with plans to eat one at home. I had inhaled them both by the time I was driving past the Novato exit.

The other was generously filled with a ground beef and dill mixtrue. Other fillings include Italian Sausage, Chicken Pot Pie, and Cabbage Vermicelli

What !!! A cabbage donut?

I've been slighly deceptive. I'm attempting to intrigue people who might not otherwise be interested in food in San Rafael or this particular type of food. That is the reason I split this off of the main Golden Orb thread.

Now don't stop reading when you hear what it is ... a piroshki ... unlike any piroshki I've ever had.

Seriously, this was exactly like a soft, puffy, greaseless warm donut packed with flavor. It had nothing to do with the leaden and tasteless piroshki I've had all my life. It would be impossible for me to eat two of any other pirohski at one sitting.

Not that they are tiny. They are slightly larger than a regular sweet filled donut. One would make quite the nice lunch for a less greedy person. The spinach had such a fresh, bright taste and the cheese stood right up to it. It was a wonderful marriage.

Hey, fancy-shmancy restaurants ... stop by Golden Orb and consider putting something similar to this on your menu. Call it savory donuts if you like

I did a response in the main thread that was deleted in response to a query about whether they will be making cheese and mushroom piroski. I asked on my visit and the owner said that was a great idea. He wasn't putting them on the menu immediately, but he will. So anyone interested in this should ask when stopping by the shop to give him an idea there is a demand for it.

I suspect my response was deleted because .... well, I'll be more cryptic here ... I mentioned this amazing shop was getting trashed elsewhere on the web where the description of the unsatisfied poster could not have even been possible. Should anyone stumble across that, the Chowhound raves in the above link were my experience

Also, the only untried flavor to date has been the cabbage. After being dazzled by the two piroski I just downed, I had considered turning around in Novato and getting one, but I was running late. for an appointment. That was the only thing that stopped me.

The tiny shop is two blocks off the San Rafael exit. It is easy on and off. Give them a try.-COLLAPSE
