We,just got back from a reunion with friends in Soho after 10 years in So. Cal. We were early and stopped into Ed's for some Raw Bar and a Lobster Roll. Oysters and Clams on the half were fantastic, served properly with a mignonette and a cool red cocktail sauce for the clams in which was subtly camouflaged strings of lemon peel that gave the sauce unexpected levels of flavour. Perhaps this was also cut with some mignonette as the color was darker and flavors more complex than the common meh cocktail sauce. The freshly grated horseradish on the side is a nice touch too.
The Lobster Roll at Ed's is Wicked Huge! Chunks of Claw and Tail, thickened with shreds of knuckle, allowing a light hand on the Mayo which equals the sweet lobster flavour really stands out. The Roll literally has some heft to it, easily a pound of meat, IMO no way less than 2 small Lobsters were involved in this, so its about falling out of the roll when served. Watching someone try to pick this up and work their way into it with dignity should provide entertainment for your accompanying date, Guys and Girls alike.
We also had the Sauteed Skate which was excellent, very light, fresh, (bad skate is really bad) just flour dusted, quick in the pan, not greasy at all, which IS available in NYC.
The table next to us had the whole Branzino: looked great and was quickly all gone. Ditto his buddy's grilled pollack.
They've got a well thought out wine list/by the glass. Great beer on tap. They're right out of the Bleecker Street Hole (#6) and opened Sundays. Lobst not a Cheep date but a really good value here . NY born-X-So-Cal impression....
