»Zingerman's Roadhouse - comfort food when it was much needed
Ever have one of those weeks? Well, I did this week. I declaired to my husband yesterday before I left for work that I would not be cooking dinner so don't even ask. I declaired to my husband yesterday before I left for work that I would not be cooking dinner so don't even ask. I was going to try to make a reservation during the day but didn't have time to. DH didn't help me with any fabulous suggestions. I didn't want fancy - it was casual Friday at work and I wasn't about to come home and put on something nice for dinner. From what I had heard about Zingerman's Roadhouse, it sounded like it might fit the bill. I love the deli and had been wanting to try the Roadhouse. I thought we probably wouldn't want to endure the long wait. Called and talked to the hostess, who mentioned they have call ahead seating, after hearing my disappointment over the hour wait. It worked out perfectly. Nice night for a drive to boot. It was just what I was looking for, casual, fun and some darn good American food. I love mac & cheese so my mouth was already watering for some good and heavy comfort food. Our waiter was awesome and very helpful. I couldn't decide between the pimento mac and cheese with bacon or the one with jack cheese and chicken. The waiter offered to bring us a sample of the pimento cheese and it was really good. I still was having a hard time deciding so I asked the waiter which mac and cheese he likes and he suggested the two I was having a hard time deciding over. Then he said the best thing ever - he suggested getting the pimento and bacon and adding sauteed mushrooms to it. That totally put it over the top as I love love love mushrooms. It was a blend of 3 - button, cremini and shiitake - sauteed with garlic. SO GOOD! I ate a shameless amount of it along with their awesome bread! DH had the whole catfish and picked it clean. He said the greens were awesome, the grits were good - nothing special. At one point the waiter came over and explained that there were two big tickets just ahead of us and our food should be out soon. I had just finished a house salad and hadn't even though about the wait, apology unnecessary. However, somehow DH ended up with a free side of garlic mashed potatoes and the most heavenly chicken gravy. The only sad part of the meal was feeling too stuffed to have dessert. Next time. I have a newfound love for pimento cheese. Got 1/2 lb to bring home and the waiter threw in a loaf of the Jewish Rye bread for us. Great comfort food. Super fresh ingredients - which is what they are known for. And of course, fantastic service!!-COLLAPSE / REPLY
