good to know

Diablo Burger is located right on the Square in downtown, making this a great place for a casual date or a family dinner. Order your food and eat outside to enjoy live music and other events that often take place on the Square!

What I like about this restaurant is that it is all about being local: most of their vegetables, beverages, dairy products and meat come from small-scale family farms located within the Colorado Plateau region (As of yet, not everything can be supplied from within this region, so the restaurant maintains a commitment to buying from small-scale producers located as close as possible).

When you eat here, you’re not just satisfying your tummy—you are also supporting your local economy by buying food that was grown sustainably and (often) organically as well, by farmers you can drive to visit personally. The cows come from two ranches located on the Diablo Trust land in Arizona—they are truly free-range and eat a natural diet, which I think is perfect for the Conscientious Carnivore. This food supports sustainability and evironmentally-conscious meat and vegetable production that also protects the welfare of humans as well!

Even if you don’t care where your food comes from and how it is produced, you will definitely taste the difference in the quality of the food. These are seriously tasty burgers with a hearty portion of deliciously seasoned meat, with great milkshakes and awesome beers to wa down. They even manage to make the French fries interesting, and quite distinguishing from other restaurants.

I hear that Vegetarians will be able to eat here starting in late July, as they are perfecting the recipe for their veggie burger patties. I can’t wait to try it.

Make sure you bring cash ahead of time because they don’t take credit or debit cards. While some people consider this inconvenient, it actually ensures that every cent you spend stays IN the Flagstaff economy (read more about this on their menu).

Also, if you DON’T like to eat your burgers rare, definitely remember to ask for well-done when you order. If you don’t, your burger comes very red—some people prefer this and it tastes great, but this is the only complaint I have ever heard about the food here.

In short, this place is as unpretentious and down-to-earth as it gets while still having a mission and conscience. Unlike other ritzy “specialty” restaurants that cater to yuppies and overprice everything on the menu, practically anyone could afford to eat here once in a while and enjoy the laid-back Flagstaff atmosphere at its finest.
