Chef Paul Feng works out of a kitchen that would fit inside most SUVs and he puts out amazing dishes. The fish crudo is always well chosen and thoughtfully presented. Sea urchin wrapped in thin slices of asian pear has been consistently excellent when available (when it isn't up to snuff, they won't serve it). Bouillabaisse is light and flavorful. In fact, all the fish dishes, hot and cold, have been dandy. Even the steak tartare was great.-COLLAPSE (by Buffalo Toes, created March 26, 2010)

Went here to check out this restaurant on the recommendation of some blogs and posts. We were surprised that the place almost empty at 7pm on Friday night, not a good sign. We were surprised that the place almost empty at 7pm on Friday night, not a good sign. They have a nice concept and the space is fun and quaint, but Swell is lacking in execution and flavor. Overall, nothing was bad but almost every dish left us wondering what the chef was thinking. We had the mushroom soup, ceviche, spicy tuna tartare, black cod brulee, crab cake, and bouillabaisse. All were lacking in flavor except for the bouillabaisse, which was out of balance with an overwhelming smokiness. The fish in the bouillabaisse was slightly overcooked too. The spicy tuna tartare was the biggest miss because there wasn't even a hint of spiciness. The other dishes were just lackluster and missed any sign of special touches that would justify the price (over $100 for two). I'll give them two stars for the space, nice staff, and average food.-COLLAPSE (by Shane Greenwood, created November 28, 2009)
