»Schmidt's - greatest German in SF?

I have no clue what "authentic" German food is, nor do I care. What I know is delicious -- and a vast majority of the many dishes I've had here are just that.

Yes, the room is loud. Yes, it's cash only. But it's not a place that is daring you to like it. Service is always warm, and they don't care if you mispronounce things (phew).

There are usually about 6 German beers on top, 15-20 in bottles. The wines are CA, German, Austrian, Alsace, including many varietals you don't see on many wine lists (Silvaner, Gruner Veltliner, etc.).

The menu always offers a generous range of sausages plus additional items added seasonally. Right now they have a pea cake appetizer with smoked salmon and creme fraiche that is as beautiful as it is tasty.

I always enjoy their salads -- they can be overdressed, but they're always fresh and offer great texture and interesting ingredients like kohlrabi with capers and frisee.

And of course, the sausages are always tasty - A Rosamunde patron would not be disappointed.

Is it a destination restaurant? Maybe, if you want head cheese and can't find it anywhere else. But if you live in the Mission, Bernal, Noe Valley, or even Potrero, it's definitely worth a trip.-COLLAPSE
