I ate there yesterday - late afternoon, for the 1st time at this little place - thought it would be like a Gyro - seemed More like a wrap stuffed with bland pot roast and a boring incompatible sauce. $8. Large portion, but really not good at all - VERY BLAND.

It was freshly made - and the service was great. I just did not care for the texture or the mildly seasoned meat. Maybe I hit the place on an off day - I will return because the service was so friendly. But the food needs to be better, for the price.

I had a serving of house-made pistachio Baklava - 2 tiny 1-bite pieces on a plate - I think it was $3... ridiculous. I have to say, though - that the Baklava was delicious.

I will give this place another try. REPLY (by DpBluSea , created June 30, 2011)

I stopped by to try this out today because a friend said it was better than Afendi's (on the other side of Petaluma). It's an overcast day and on the cold side, but I had my dog with me so I ate outside. The woman who waited on me couldn't answer most of my questions due to a language barrier, but took my order. I ordered a hummas and domla to go, and a chicken kabob to eat there. Besides bringing me my tea and the kabob plate, I never saw the waitress again. I had to go in and ask for more tea (for which they charged FULL PRICE), to get the bill, a to go box for my leftovers, and the to-go orders. The dolma box wasn't taped closed (like at Afendi's) and the oil leaked all over the bag before she had even set it down on the table. The owner passed by me several times, but other than nodding at me, he never spoke or stopped to chat. He did, however, come out with my credit card and receipt to get my signature and asked "How was everything?"

The chicken kabob was good, and a little more moist than at Afendi's, which was nice. The waitress said they make the dolmas there, and promised that they were made two days ago, but they were on the tough side and not very flavorful. Hummus is good, and the portion was generous, but no bread came along with the order.

All in all, the food at Real Doner but the service lacks quite a bit. (by CopperKoi , created February 28, 2011)

I've been wanting to go here for a long time and I finally went for lunch this weekend and it was great. I have never eaten doner before so i have nothing to compare it to, but by my basic sandwich standards: good proportions of meat/vegetables/sauces/bread (which for me means not too much bread, a little bit of dripping from the sauce, plenty of vegetables), fresh ingredients, flavorful seasonings & ingredients, a mixture of hot & cold- it was perfect. It was also very reasonably priced- a huge sandwich roll for $8.50. I ordered the chicken doner sandwich- there are many other menu items i want to try next- including the meats in plate format (rice, salad, bread) and an appetizer platter that included a spread with walnuts and eggplants. I'm very excited to get to know this place better. (by balabanian , created August 15, 2010)
