good to know
French food gets all the buzz, but Portuguese food is one of Europe’s finest – if underrated. Aquario is upscale, but not a hipster kind of place – but the food is worth the trip. They’ll start you off with warm bread and slices of grilled Portuguese sausage (chorizo) then a must-try is the “caldo verde” soup – potato stock mixed with shredded collard greens and a slice of sausage – perfect for those 20 degree nights! Another great appetizer is the clams in garlic sauce – very light with a touch of mustard. Mmmmm.... The veal chop is excellent, served with broccoli rabe, they always have a fresh seafood selection (fish is the Portuguese thing), try “baccalao” - salted codfish de-salted and served with potatoes, oinions and peppers, “carne de porco alentejana” - juicy chunks of pork served with steamed clams and potatoes in its own broth – both are excellent. If you like red wines, try anything from the Alentejo region – it’s fruity with out acidity, perfect for a meat dish. A white wine must try is Casal Garcia “Vinho Verde” - crisp and delicious. Look for the owner, Senor Manuel – he’s been in the biz a long time, picks the fish himself and knows how to treat customers. Reservations are needed, esp. on weekends. Oh – and to end a meal, try a glass of Port wine. Boa!
