good to know
Zazu has its own organic garden that supplies the seasonal menu.
The zazu kitchen is inspired by the American and Italian roots of Sonoma County’s wine growing families.
American classics are made with local ingredients such as making an It’s It with house-made ice cream and oatmeal cookies dipped in Berkeley’s Scharffen Berger chocolate or tomato soup with a Petaluma’s Bellwether Carmody grilled cheese sandwich
Italian inspired dishes have included: vin santo braised rabbit with chestnut pappardelle and thumbelina carrots; seared sonoma duck with laura chenel goat cheese gnocchi, black mission figs and saba; or vin santo ice cream with biscotti di Prato. Pastas are made daily with eggs from the chef’s own chickens.
“Pinot and Pizza Nights” - Weds, Thurs, Sun.

What we ate:
Slow Roasted backyard beets + hazelnuts ($5.50) B+
Fresh from the garden, the beets were a nice way to start the meal
cowgirl creamery inverness + apple rhubarb condiment ($7.50) taste B+ / value C
While I had no complaints on the taste of the cheese and accompanying condiment, the portion was really on the small side - basically a sliver. I am going to stop ordering cheese in restaurants as this is not the first time I have been dissapointed by a cheese portion.
Grilled Korean Beef Short Ribs + Sesame rice ball ($15) A-
Best dish of the night - short ribs were succeulent and they were complimented perfectly with the best rice ball i have ever had.
For main dishes
Black Eyed Pea Cakes with Fried Green Tomatoes, Wild Arugula, tabasco vinaigrette ($24.50) B
Tasty vegetarian option that my fiancee ordered. The winning component was clearly the perfectly battered, tangy sweet, Fried Green Tomatoes.
Seared Liberty Duck Breast - buttermily mashed potatoes, bing cherry and rhubarb gastrique ($28) B+
Perfectly cooked and seasoned duck breast. The meat was served over the potatoes and I have to say i perfer when potatoes are on the side of the meat -- I don't like the duck skin to get soggy in the mashed potatoes. Very impressed with the rhubarb, as not a typical fruit i eat - but the cherry's could have been reduced or chopped finer.
Dessert: Peanut Butter Ice Cream Sandwich B+
The ice cream / gelato was tasty. Only negative was that the cookie support the gelato was a bit thick-COLLAPSE
