James Beard House Picks Yangming For Chinese New Year Extravaganza

Yangming restaurant has been invited to present this year’s Chinese New Year Extravaganza banquet dinner at the historic James Beard House in New York City on Monday, January 26, 2009. Also honored with an invitation to present the wines for this banquet is well-known wine expert and widely-respected wine merchant, Gregory Moore of Moore Brothers Wine Company.

The banquet dinner is a grand celebration of Chinese New Year 4707, The Year of The Ox. “It is a wonderful honor for me,” said Michael Wei, Executive Chef/ Owner of the award-winning Yangming. “It’s humbling to be chosen; to me it’s like a lifetime achievement award. In cuisine there’s nothing more renowned and prestigious than an invitation to present a banquet at The James Beard House.”

At this banquet attendees will each be served all the following hors d’oeuvres: Firecracker Truffle-Oiled Tri-Mushroom Spring Rolls, Kimchee Beef and Chinese Chive Dumplings, Spicy Ahi Tuna Tartare and Grilled Malaysian Belacan Satay Shrimp. The wine especially chosen for this course by Greg Moore is Crémant d’Alsace Domiane Barmès-Buecher 2006.

The first entrée course is JUMBO LUMP CRAB CAKE AND ASIAN PEAR SALAD, potato-crusted crab cake with salad of honey pine nuts, Branch Creek Farm baby greens and Asian pear slices and the special wine is Bacharacher Reisling Kabinett trocken Weingut Ratzenbeger 2007.

The second entrée course is PAN-SEARED LOTUS ROOT CRISPED BLACK SEA BASS, with Shanghai baby bok choy, Chinese go-chi berries, mango, fresh water chestnuts, “Kaoling” liquor-black bean emulsion served with a chosen matching wine Touraine Sauvignon “Les Trois Chênes” Domaine Ricard 2007.

Then celebrants will be served ORCHID OOLONG TEA-SMOKED DUCK with Chinese eggplant salsa, rice noodles, tamarind-hoisin sauce along with Gregory Moore’s choice of Côtes de Gascogne Domaine du Château Larroque 2006.

PAN-SEARED SZECHUAN XO FILET MIGNON MEDALLIONS in a Szechuan XO sauce with Chinese broccoli tips and truffle potato dumplings is served next and the specially chosen Lirac Domaine Mayran 2006 will be poured.

A luxurious dessert of PROPITIOUS BLACK SWEET RICE PUDDING with Chinese New Year Cake and Chocolate Hazelnut Heaven and Opera comes graced with the pouring of Monbazillac Château Haute Bernaise 2001.

As a special treat for customers at Yangming, this same exact Chinese New Year Banquet will be offered at only $56 per person plus tax and gratuities (minimum 4) - available from January 22, 2009 until February 28, 2009. (Please note: The wines included with the James Beard House dinner are not included with the Yangming dinner).
