»Chez Spencer Trip Report

Had a lovely meal there last night.
Somehow it took me all this time to get there.
Definitely recommend, and I'll return.

Nice space with a lovely soaring ceiling and open kitchen, generous room between tables, great service by our server Awni, reservation ready on time, full bar.

Somehow it took me all this time to get there.

Nice space with a lovely soaring ceiling and open kitchen, generous room between tables, great service by our server Awni, reservation ready on time, full bar.

Cocktail:
Had an old fashioned. This drink has a lot of latitude in preparation, they can be glorious or just eh. I often order one as a sort of groundhog day test for whether the meal will be good. This one was really good, a harbinger of things to come.

First:
One of us had a lobster cappucino (I had a taste, heavenly).
The others shared asparagus in truffle emulsion (lovely) and some seared scallops (perfectly cooked, but the scallops themselves not the tastiest on the planet, delicious sauce)

Second:
I and the bf had sweetbreads. Yum. Perfectly crispy, not overdone in the middle, again a lovely sauce.
Two others had a smoked duck breast with poached egg. Fantastic.
Our fifth had a beet salad, also really excellent.

Entree:
I and the bf had venison. Gorgeous, delicious, wonderful reduction sauce. Came with these big-slice potatoes gratin that were about as good as potatoes can get.
Two others had fillet mignon, which was nice but not stellar (this is reported, I did not try). They were out of the lamb roast and I think both would have preferred that.
Fifth diner had a sturgeon that was fantastic.

Dessert:
This may be my favorite dessert menu I've seen in a long time. In addition to a nice cheese selection (was too full to do a cheese course), they had my 3 favorite desserts:
-- granita (champagne grapefruit)
-- cookie plate (an assortment of cookies is maybe my favorite)
-- profiteroles.
As it happens, we all shared a warm chocolate pudding cake and the granita. I didn't try the pudding cake (not something I like) but the granita was stellar. The put a cream of some sort on top that I would have left off. But they added an unannounced cookie that was so good I want to go back for the cookie plate.-COLLAPSE

Spencer on the Go in SOMA (Folsom, corner of 7th) is great! They are there Wed-Sat after 6PM. Their menu changes. I've enjoyed the shrimp vol au vent, truffle burger slider, braised lamb cheeks sandwich and they always have a good bisque. The escargot lollipops are also fun. Great area to get a drink.
