good to know
This is the address of Grainger’s- Speed can be found across from them, but not consistently
! Hours are very erratic, albeit a smidge more reliable since Speed’s “apprentices” took over.
It’s a reasonable walk from the Andrew T stop on the Red Line, maybe 10 minutes. (See below) Can also take #10 bus from Copley or Andrew, drops yoo off at Mass Ave and Shirley.
Walking Directions from Andrew:
Take Southampton Street west over I-93, past the South Bay shopping center, then under a bridge. Your first left will take you into Newmarket Square, a large industrial food complex. Walk straight towards Grainger; Speed’s wagon is on the close side of the street.
Speed’s uses large all-beef Pearl franks marinated in apple juice and brown sugar, grills them over charcoal until they get a great snap when you bite into them, puts them on a good quality grilled roll, then tops them with homemade toppings, including relish, all beef chili, mustard, and a special sauce.
Call his cell at 617 839-0102 if you want to be sure he’s there.

I recently arranged to have them cater a "Backyard BBQ" (OK, it was the parking lot in back of our building, but isn't a parking lot part of the Speed experience?) at my company in Lexington. Gregg (and his wife & son?) did a spectacular job. They showed up 45 minutes early with the original Speed's wagon behind their pickup truck, quickly set up a portable grill (wood charcoal) and didn't complain when our company meeting went 45 min long and delayed the start of the festivities.
We had Speed dogs, with all the usual Speed's fixings, pasta salad and grilled sweet corn-on-the-cob, plus grilled watermelon with balsamic sauce, for 90 (apparently they've done as many as 400). Everything was delicious. It did take 40-45 min to work through the line (of course the dogs were prepared to order), but we had plenty of beer (Guinness goes well with a Speed dog!) and games to keep everyone occupied.
Everyone thought it was fantastic. And $15 per person (we provided the beer) seemed very reasonable to me (the dogs normally cost $7 each).
The biggest problem was convincing the many Speed newbies that they should order their dogs "loaded". It was truly sad how many Speed dogs I saw go by looking lonely with nothing but mustard on them. Usually, a good idea, but the real Speed experience mandates it be "loaded"!
I also saw one of our senior management team scarf down a Speed dog in 2 minutes flat, which was a little scary...
Cheers,
Kevin-COLLAPSE
