It's in the North (Santa Rosa), but they make EVERYTHING there, including the tortillas, worth a stop there, if you are in that area.
Good food, friendly service, good prices!

»Antojitos la Texanita - Santa Rosa, More good food!
Tuesday night was my birthday and I was jonesing for some Mexican food. I had originally selected La Palapa, but based on the most recent review, from 2007, a downhill report, I didn't want to risk the disappointment. Instead, my husband and I took a cruise down to Roseland to try La Texanita again.
This was our second visit to the shop and we tried some new things, and one repeat.

Ceviche Tostada - Impossibly fresh fish (chopped fine) with small amounts of both onion and cilantro. Not too limey at all (so I added more) on a crisp tostada shell. I asked that this dish be served before the rest of the meal, that request was not heeded. It got eaten last because it didn't need to be eaten hot. To my amazement the tostada shell was STILL as crisp as it was on the first bite! Impressive and delicious tastes. (Note: I am NOT a regular fish eater, mostly only eat raw, and have a very strong aversion to fishy fish...this was SO good.)
Pollo asado huarache - this was just ok. Actually, everything was great except for the chicken. It was slightly rubbery, and didn't taste all that fresh. This was a disappointment. This is too bad. We had had this variety last time and really liked it. I'd try a carnitas one next time.
Carne asada plate - Oh man. Asked how we wanted our steak cooked, we said medium rare...which is, of course, impossible to do with steak this thin. Despite the request, it came out cooked perfectly medium, which really worked. VERY flavorful and nicely spiced meat cut in to 1.5 in thick (width) strips. Lovely handmade/fresh corn tortillas. And the rice! It isn't very often you try rice at a Mexican restaurant and can actually TASTE the various ingredients. I am willing to bet they use caldo de pollo in their rice vs. just cooking with spices. A very nice chickeny flavor. The refried beans are almost white, and are a mix of creamy and chunky, which is how I like them.
All in all a wonderful meal for my birthday. With 2 beers a piece and all that food (we were stuffed) the bill was $40.

My Mexican coworker swears by the chicken milaneza quesadilla. I MUST try that. It sounds devine.
(I also saw 2 burritos, one regular, and one wet. They are the largest I've seen in Santa Rosa. ACTUALLY the size of your head. The regular burrito was griddled and looked great, the wet burrito looked great too. I will have to just bite the bullet and eat my way through this menu.)
Cheers,
