good to know
If you’ve ever lived in Bavaria, the Schmankerl Stube will strike you as quite authentic in both its food and atmosphere, though the waiters and waitresses (despite dressing in the traditional Bavarian Trachten) don’t really replicate German Gasthaus customs.
The food is the main attraction here, meticulously prepared in authentic German style by a Bavarian chef, ranging from the Wurst Teller (sausage platter, including curry ketchup and sweet mustard), to the spaetzle (a kind of German dumpling), to the schnitzels and the Geschnetzeltes (scalloped meat). You can even get the peculiar German cola-citrus mix known as Spezi, as well as imported beers (of course—it’s the national beverage of Germany) and wines.
Your pork and beef will be topped with the various German sauces (Sahne – cream, Jaeger – hunter, Sauer – sour and slightly sweet, Pfeffer – peppercorn). Schweinshaxe is really only for those who know what they’re getting into, as it’s a full pork shank with bone and gristle and requires 24 hour advance notice.
