I only visited Toby's once but I was really disappointed in the margherita pie. It was somewhat boring and burnt to boot.

That said, with the price of pizza being as low as it is (in comparative terms) I think the best course of action is to visit each place a few times and make up your own mind.

Based upon one, and only one, visit to Giuseppina's and, perhaps, a half dozen to Toby's, I'd choose Toby's. I found Giuseppina's pizza to be limp, a bit too charred and generally less tasty than Toby's. Plus, the range of salads and sides available at Toby's, combined with the genial atmosphere and selection of beers, makes Toby's a more pleasant experience. I dont want to represent my opinion for anything more than it is, so let me start with this caveat: I've never eaten at Giuseppina's and my comments here are based solely on the impression that I've gotten from reading these boards that Giuseppina's pie is very similar to Lucali's which it has some relationship with.

We like Toby's. A rather lot. It isn't our favorite style of pizza, but its a nice place to go, usually just the two of us, for a low-key weeknight pizza, a beer or two, and some conversation or sports viewing. The people are always super friendly, the atmosphere is pleasingly corner-bar, and they have some pies we've really loved (the one with fresh greens and truffle oil is great - though probably not if you are averse to truffle oil). In nicer weather sitting at the small tables outside is a nice way to spend an evening.

I just don't care for the Lucali/Giuseppina's style of pizza. (again, at lucali) ive found the crust too crispy/brittle for my tastes (i prefer the combination puffy/char flavor of a more traditional neopolitan style) and the rest of the flavors somewhat muted - i think of their pizzas as overhyped and underseasoned. A comparison to a traditional pie place I would compare their (lucali's) pizza to, unfavorably, would be totonno's in coney island - which i love. So i guess its not just the crispy/thin style i dont like, per se, but the impression ive gotten (over a more than a couple visits) that their crust, sauce, and toppings are just not seasoned enough for my tastes.-COLLAPSE

AFAIK, Peppe's is the best in the South Slope. Why change when you've got a good thing?

I like Toby's Public House, as well. But, I don't think they deliver.
