»Wanted to Like it, Didn't
2nd time there. First time was very good, this time was terrible. Took waiter's rec on soup choice, and potato/something was terrible. Had pasta special, spaghetti Carbonara, and it too was terrible. pasta wasn't cooked right, taste of sauce disappointed.
And the service from the waiter was also a problem. Took 30 mins to get apps, and never came by to see if I liked his recommendation.

Oh well. Might try it again and get the Duck, which was good first time. And will try to get a different waiter!-COLLAPSE
»Cafe of Love: Hit and Miss..."please pay your bill, time to leave, we need the table" (huh?)
short story: nice ambiance, average service (except for the rude exit), bread table too close to the bar, "great" pumpkin/harvest soup, "awesome" venison osso bucco, "blah" halibut, "weak" pumpkin creme brulee, "average" coffee, our party of 8 was told to leave to make room for a party of 15 (WTF !?!?)

long story: I should have seen this coming when I went to check out the place at 5pm on a Wednesday...we were looking for a new place to take our friends so I went in and asked for a menu-to-go and was told "no, not possible"...hmm, that felt a little rude...call me crazy, but I think every restaurant should have 5-10 paper printouts of their menu to give to walk-ins who ask for them...or at least try to print one out while I wait...ok, we have the internet, so I was able to check things out at home, but the rude initiation to this establishment should have tipped me off...the place looked nice, the menu was interesting, and I made the reservation (via phone) for 10 people at 7pm for a Saturday night two weeks in the future...now, at this point, had the person taking my reservation said to me, "yes, we can seat you at that time but you'll need to finish by 10pm" I think I'd remember it because I would have cancelled the reservation...trust me, Leslie, we were NEVER told this in advance...in fact, I later called to change the reservation to 8 people and, again, no 3-hour time limit was mentioned...OK, back to the review...I walk in with my wife at 6:30pm and we sit at the (beautiful) bar for a quiet tete-a-tete before we grow into the "18% gratuity included" mass of 8...now, as my chow.com user name suggests, I'm a Florida Gator...why do I bring this up? when I left my house, it was the 4th quarter of the football game and tied at 13-13...I walk in to Cafe of Love and suddenly realize "there's no TV here!"...panic sets in...thank god I moaned to the bartender, because he tells me that O'Malley's pub is just a few doors down and they had plenty of TVs...this earned him a nice tip as I was able to sneak away and see the Gators squeak out a 23-20 win...I'm now in a good mood, so it's time to enjoy a nice meal with good friends...after drinks at the bar (can't really review cocktails, though the sangria was in a cool-looking large glass canister on the bar), our party is seated at 7:30pm...again, if you want us out of there at 10pm, seat us when we all show up at 7:05pm, not 25 minutes later...we still have no clue that the meter is running and down to 2.5 hours...we're seated at two 4-tops against a wall by the very large front windows...I like the framed mirrors on the wall which lets me see the bustling room and not just my friends and the wall behind them (no offense to them)...I ordered the pumpkin soup and proceed to the bread table...no cheeses tonight, but the bread was fresh, the pickled carrots were tasty, as was the hummus...wasn't too keen on squeezing up against the bar patrons to get to the bread table though (maybe this table can be moved elsewhere or open up the table on the restaurant-side instead of the bar-side?)...the soup was very satisfying and just right for the season...so far the evening's plusses far out-weigh the minuses...even my glass of malbec was in the plus column! the highlight of my meal was yet to come, venison osso bucco served on soft polenta...wow...the meat was not gamey at all and the polenta reminded me of ricotta cheese...we were in 4-star land up to here...but wait...why is my water glass empty (this is my number 1 restaurant pet peeve)? and some people at the table have empty wine glasses longing to be re-filled (we were ordering glasses instead of bottles for the variety)? the devil's in the details sometimes and they dropped the ball here...my friend's halibut lacked any substance (his quote was "blah")...my wife finished up with the pumpkin creme brulee which also came off the "blah" shelf...no real flavor...a waste of calories in my opinion...my coffee was a slight disappointment...nothing beats a fine cup of java after a nice meal and this wasn't it...too bad, as my meal was all thumbs up so far...then the bill came...no biggie, we expected the 18% add-in and we did drink like fishes, so $105 per head seemed reasonable...we didn't pull out the credit cards right away as the night was young and the company good...then the waiter actually had the cojones to come over and ask us to pay the bill right away as they had a party of 15 people waiting for our space...WTF? we just spent a short g-note in your little establishment and you're asking us to leave? like, for good? NEVER to return? no problem, you just lost a few stars on your review...like I said up front, I should have seen this rude behavior coming...we spoke to Leslie (the owner) about this and she thought this was normal (ha!)...she also insisted that we were notified of the time limits when we made the reservations...fact is, no one at our table had ever been asked to leave a restaurant before and I doubt we ever will in the future...BOTTTOM LINE: There are many other fine restaurant choices in Northern Westchester, don't bother rolling the dice at Cafe of Love.-COLLAPSE
