»Serpentine -- Lunch today

4 stars

Had a great lunch today at Serpentine. The atmosphere/decor here is what I prefer, casual with pretty elements, like a beautiful flower arrangement at the bar.

Prices at lunch are much more reasonable than at dinner. Menu changes, very seasonal. They take reservations -- big plus.

We had the potato/green garlic soup. Served piping hot, the way I prefer. Also had a really delicious risotto with pen tendrils and other spring veggies. Not only delicious, but pretty, too! (Only $11.50 -- I know it's work, takes time to make this!!)

The cheeseburger came with crispy fries - I prefer Zuni's but Zuni's is much more expensive. Fresh fried cod tacos.

We were too full for dessert but looked over the menu -- next time!

The waitress was perfect, friendly, just perfect. It's one of those places, as you're leaving, you're thinking, I can't wait to eat here again!!-COLLAPSE

»All the old standby's were there, slightly gentrified.

I had the Red Flannel Hash with poached eggs and toast. The eggs were over medium-easy, would have liked it a little easier. They perched atop a mound of hash, which comprised home fries, tender cubed steak and roasted beets, a surprise nouveau touch. I liked their potatoes, because each piece had a thin golden layer all around it but was fluffy on the inside, like Tater-Tot's grown up sibling,

We ordered one large Buckwheat Pancake for the table, which was departure from the usual stack. It arrived fully dressed in a generous soak of maple syrup, a centerpiece of whipped cream and walnuts, no butter. Small bits of apple popped up in every bite. Very large portion. It all could have been too much, but was balanced right. This is a good option if you have a taste for sweet with your main savory.

The place was full but because the tables were spaced nicely, you didn't feel boxed in. It was noticeably quiet for a converted warehouse, allowing us to engage in conversation without strain.

The coffee could be better and they never came back to refill. But I would still return.-COLLAPSE

»The perfect neighborhood restaurant

4 stars

We discovered the charms of savory bread pudding here. Perhaps too rich and buttery to eat a whole serving, but great to share. This is one of the first places I think of when we have a night out -- it's a simple neighborhood restaurant, welcoming and warm. The cocktails are great as is the homemade lemonade.
