Take the St. Charles Street car to Oak Street, nice scenic ride and will be fun for the out of towners to see the beautiful homes on the Avenue. First stop: Oak Wine Bar is in the first block. Great tapas, drinks and wine selection. Second stop: a couple of blocks down Oak Street stop in at Jacques-Imo's cafe for dinner. Third stop: Next door is the Maple Leaf for a little live music. We went with great anticipation and this is certainly a place that tries hard. Nothing was bad, nothing was exceptionally good. The servers were ernest, even if my appetizer was missed and brought minutes before my main. Don't...do...that. If there is a kitchen screw up or server error, don't charge for the dish. Your bad, don't make me suffer for it.

The savory mixed cheesecake w/gator was overly rich and the individual flavors lost in the whole. The much vaunted Godzilla meets Fried Green Tomatoes had crispy soft shell crab legs, stuffed with a soggy oyster mix over green tomatoes that were not cooked through: basically raw and not even warm.
All this for prices barely lower than August. Lunch, maybe, and keep it simple.-COLLAPSE
»Maybe the best restaurant in the country!!!

With the double wammy of Katrina and the economy it is now possible to get into Jacques without a two or three hour wait (some of the time). We try to go there from Tampa at least every three months to get our fix. We always start with the alligator cheesecake. We usually have the blackened redfish but there are so many good choices that it is hard to pick. I have never had anything I didn't love. Try Godzilla meets Fried Green Tomatoes if you like soft shell crabs. A real culinary experience.-COLLAPSE
