Range is too loud and way too over priced for the micro bites they sell as whole meals. (by WayneLambright, created June 25, 2010)

This was a second birthday dinner I planned for my partner. It was our first time at Range. We had a string of slightly disappointing bay area meals so I did not get my hopes up. I was thinking perhaps I was getting jaded and overly picky. But the string of disappointing meals was about to end. Our dinner at Range was excellent. The food was uniformly delicious. The food was fresh, refined, very flavorful and not overly heavy or butter saturated. I will be coming back here for certain and highly recommend it.

Here is what we ate:

little gem lettuces with bacon, aged cheddar cheese, breadcrumbs and green peppercorn vinaigrette- Excellent way to start the meal. Fresh and tasty.

California yellowtail, clementine mandarins and orach. The fish was impeccably fresh tasting. Excellent.

steamed manila clams with fennel sausage and spicy chilies. Served with grilled bread. This was completely amazing. Steamed clams are ubiquitous at restaurants but I couldn’t remember the last time I ate a more delicious and satisfying version. The sausage went perfectly with the clams and the broth was not a heavy butter bomb as is often the case with steamed clams.

whiskey and brown sugar glazed pork spare ribs. Another stellar dish. The meat was moist and flavorful and not overly greasy.

Roasted lamb and spaetzle main course. Consisted of a lamb chop and a hunk of braised shoulder over toothsome spaetzle. I ordered my chop medium and others ordered it medium rare. I liked that the chops actually arrived done as they were ordered. The chops were excellent. The hunk of braised shoulder was incredibly moist and perfectly seasoned and flavored. The sauce was perfectly balanced. This dish was a huge success.

One of our party ordered the mushroom cannelloni. It was pretty amazing.

For dessert we shared:

Cheesecake- very good

Ice cream coated with a chocolate shell-very good

bittersweet chocolate soufflé- It was refreshing to eat a chocolate dessert that was actually… chocolaty.-COLLAPSE

One of the best restaurant, fun fun with great food and service, love the ambiance and that red fridge. (by onlygeorgio, created February 27, 2010)

»Great food with no fuss

Have eaten there a few times, last in November. Really carefully prepared food from best seasonal ingredients with attentive but relaxed service and similarly smart casual, unfussy surroundings. The dishes we had all were inventive enough not to be boring, but straightforward enough that my "meat and potatoes" other half also came away happy. Excellent and original (but not scary) cocktails. Had the good luck to be back in San Fran in early Nov. AND snagged a reservation for 4 at Range. It was just as spectacular the 2nd time around. I am from the rural South, where slow-cooked pork and grits take pride of place. That said, I have never had tastier "hominey" and the coffee-rubbed pork shoulder was beyond compare.

Again, I found the wine list to be VERY reasonably priced, especially for being in a city as pricey as San Fran. The staff remains miraculously 'tude-free, and that is no small thing as our party included one fairly picky eater and one indecisive orderer, so we certainly must have trespassed on the waiter's patience.
Yeah, Range!-COLLAPSE

»I love Range...

5 stars

It's definitely one of my favorite restaurants in San Francisco. It's so solidly good. You know every dish on the menu is good, and the service will be good, and the drinks will be fantastic. It's reliable, is what I'm trying to say. I've never had a bad meal there, and it seems very worth the money you spend for dinner. (by mudaba, created October 7, 2009)
