good to know
Spice Market on Facebook.
They serve “family style” a.k.a everyone shares each dish ordered. Order your main course AFTER eating your appetizers. They serve when the food is ready, not when you are. They tend to rush here. Don’t get me wrong, the service is good, but they move at a faster pace. So by ordering a bit at a time...you will slow them down a bit :)
Some food is hot, some medium, some not at all. Ask the experienced, friendly servers and they will guide you.
Medium to lite spice recommendation: Pork Vindaloo (get the coconut sticky rice with it) pairs well.
Also ask for seating by the french doors in the summer (upstairs) it gets hot in there.
If you are in the area around 3pm, when the dining room is not serving, sit outside and they will still take food orders ;)
They have semi-private areas for groups of 6 or more downstairs. Pretty nice setup. 300.00 for six people minimum, 500.00 for 10. (These are from 2006)
Enjoy.

»cool place for drinks with friends but not food..
I have heard good reputation about here so I took my 3 grummet girl friends from HK and Tokyo when they were in town. Since we all have eaten decent asian fusion food, most of all dishes were disappointing. We tried their recommendation such as Thai spicy fried chicken, onion and chili crusted Short Rib but I felt like they were missing flavor and noting special. While the decor is really interesting almost with a disney characteristic to it, I found the food to be fair. Honestly nothing I would really run back to in all honesty. Granted, we were a large group but still it should have still been the quality all the same. It was interesting and I guess for visitors to NY, worth going to but for me, a resident, once was enough.
I took my son last year for his Bar Mitzvah dinner. That's where he wanted to go. It did not disappoint. The food was fabulous! The waitstaff was very attentive, but far from smothering. The crowd was not overly noisy althoughthe place was bouncing. We will be going back sometime soon. REPLY (5 Replies)
I think the food was great, but what about those outfits! I can't believe they make the female waitstaff wear shirts with no back! Why should the waitresses be part of the decor.

Ive travelled to NYC about 10 timesnow and, even with the abundance of options available for dining - i always make time for a visit to spice market.
Anyone have a recipe for kasundi sauce?!
Finally got there for the first time, with some out-of-towners. As everyone says, it's a real nice space. Hopping bar (on Friday night anyway). We did the tasting menu, $45 for "10 courses, five tastes", whatever the five tastes meant (sweet/spicy/...?).

I was VERY impressed with the food. Many of the specialties are on the tasting menu, and several of them were spectacular. I think the restaurant was hot so many years ago that people forget why. It was one of my better meals in NYC in the past year, and that is saying something. Samosas were great, fish was excellent, shaved tuna, all of it was worth a taste. And quantities weren't skimpy, was a hell of a deal we thought.
Gewurtz Sangria rocked as well, had 2 pitchers. If you haven't been yet, it's an easy reservation, and well worth finally getting to.
