Was out in Hopewell, NJ, recently and a friend suggested I give Antimo's a try. A curious little place-- trying to be all things to all people. A curious little place-- trying to be all things to all people. It began many years ago as a strip mall pizza and sub place, but one of the chefs aspired to the kind of cooking he learned in his native Campania. Eventually he bought out his partners, enlisted his brother in the kitchen, and his sister to help with service, and expanded the menu tremendously. So, while it is still possible to walk up to the counter and ask them to heat up a slice for you, or order any of the numerous styles of pizza, it is also to dine quite well on more substantial Italian food.

This variety makes it possible for the kids to have pizza and chicken wings, while the adults can choose from pastas, chicken, veal, and daily specials. At the advice of a regular, I concentrated on the specials, listed on a blackboard outside and as an insert in the extensive menu.

The pappardelle with mushroom and sausage was flavorful and well balanced, although it would have been even better with fresh pasta rather than dried. Nevertheless, it was quite satisfying.

The pasta was followed by chicken cacciatore, which was moist, flavorful, and exhibited a light touch with a simple tomato and wine sauce.

It is clear that Antimo's has much to offer, and our server reported that there are plans to spruce up the small (maybe a dozen tables) some in keeping with the quality of the food, while still continuing to meet the community needs for family fare.

Like so many of the more interesting restaurants in New Jersey, Antimo's does not have a liquor license, but there is a good shop about four blocks away, should you arrive empty handed.

Definitely deserves watching, esp. if you concentrate on the daily specials and choose wisely. Doesn't swing for the bleachers, but a solid performer.-COLLAPSE
