good to know

Someone posted a comment here that this is a tourist trap. It doesn’t get many compliments on the Chowhound boards.

The Chronicle review seems to indicate that ordering should be left to the owner’s discretion. However read the last paragraphs of that review carefully. Chronicle review

Yes, the tourists have found Nanking but that doesn't mean it's not great, it just means that you have to wait a long time to get in. Get on the line! It's worth it. Just fresh, delicious plates of food not swimming in sauce like your typical Chinese food. Not over salted. The vegetables are bright green and the flavors pop in your mouth. The chef no longer cooks but looks over the place and takes your oder. Grey hair ChineseAmerican guy who looks at you and waits for you to make up your mind. Their menus are old and nasty but I'll tell you I have yet to ever look at the menu in this place. You simply wait to get seated (yes, there's usually a line) and then tell him we would like chicken and beef. Or just choose whatever is best today and he'll do the rest. He'll bring out 2-4 plates (depending on the size of your party) and explain what it is when it gets to you. Every time I've been here the food was amazing and not once did I order. A must visit when in SF's Chinatown.-COLLAPSE (by digitalczech, created October 7, 2010)
