Where did you end up going? Cantonese food in NYC is probably not as good as SF. Maybe try Flushing or Sunset Park. I am very partial to Grand Sichuan on the Upper East Side (2nd Ave. and 55th/56th St. -- not the other ones), but your New York family probably already knows it and your West Coast Cantonese mom might not like it. Any whole fish, fresh chicken with Chinese broccoli, sliced fresh pork (a plate of pork belly and hot peppers), and sliced pumpkin with ginger are very good. They have every Chinese green you could want, most off menu. The atmosphere is pleasant and so is the service. It's now BYOB since they lost their liquor license, and they have brown rice. I also love the frog legs but they are too spicy. Do not bother with duck or shrimp -- if they have a good shrimp dish, I haven't found it.-COLLAPSE / REPLY (107 Replies) (by KateC., created December 29, 2011)

Hello Glutton08!

Thank you for your recommendation! We checked out Grand Sichuan this evening, and ordered family style (er, without the family). We started off with the Dan Dan Mian, the Jellyfish appetizer, an order of steamed dumplings, then had the Sliced Fish and Sour Cabbage Soup, the Tea Smoked Duck and the Sauteed Peashoots. We were very happy with our meal. I highly recommend the Dan Dan Mian and the soup. I really wanted the Ma Po Doufu, but it was already way too much food! Do you have any particular dishes to recommend? We didn't order too many spicy dishes. In fact, the only truly spicy dish was the Dan Dan Mian. I am not afraid of spice, but not having much experience with Sichuan, would like to try something more adventurous. Would love to hear your, or anyone else's favorite dishes at Grand Sichuan.-COLLAPSE
