I've never been for dinner, but I've had their lunch prix-fixe several times and it's always great, especially for the price ($25 for app/entree, another $7 for dessert).

On one occasion, my friend was wearing a t-shirt and jeans and the service was still excellent/not snobby.

Maybe they save the stuffiness for dinner.

I've not been impressed either with Gotham Bar & Grill. A few years ago (for my birthday), I had dinner there and received major attitude from the hostess--arrived on time and she tried to seat me at a table in the bar area). Food was fine, but not worth the attitude problem. I also remember the 2-tops being too close together. REPLY (9 Replies) (by ellenost, created December 1, 2011)

There were multiple minor issues. We didn't order alcohol and the waiter seemed put out, which is not the best way to set the tone for a meal (sorry not everyone drinks alcohol). Ordered the yellowtail tartare and it was gristly, presentation is getting sloppy, the way they wiped the plates leaving saucy smudges. Foie gras was presented beautifully but it was veiny, a poor cut, and the sauce on the side had gelatinized which was unacceptable. The masala chicken was underseasoned and the black cod was a highlight of the meal. Apple strudel was crisp and well done. Souffle was excellent and perhaps the best part of the meal. All in all, not terrible but not great. Not worth $200+ by any stretch. GBG used to be one of my favorite restaurants. In the past few years, I keep giving it chances but it always disappoints. It's long in the tooth and stumbling along.

Regarding alcohol, can't say GBG is the only place I've gotten attitude (ahem EMP). I wish waiters would remember that hospitality is about making the diners feel comfortable, not guilty about what they do or do not order.-COLLAPSE

I've not been to Annisa, but have been to Gotham B&G a couple of time over the last year. It had always delivered service-wise and food-wise, a true NYC institution, and friends who went always came away very satisfied.

Plus I have yet to be disappointed by Gotham's helpful sommelier's wine picks for us.

the lovely MsMargaret and I had dinner at GB&G last night...superb in every aspect. Our table wasn't ready when we arrived, so they bought us a prosecco at the bar. elegant start. when we did get seated--side-by-side, facing the room from a banquet, another elegant touch--we ordered a la carte:

herself: seared foie gras with an Oregon Pinot Noir; seared Halibut with a white wine (Falanghina) from the Campagna region).
myself smoked sea trout with that Italian white; and roasted duck with a Rhone-style red from Italy (Sangiovese/Merlot blend).
together: a melon ice cream sundae.
every bite, it seemed like there was something new on the tongue; service was efficient and unobtrusive, our waiter was attentive in a good way, answered many-many questions, etc. etc., the other diners were interesting to look at and aside from a job interview, I'm pretty sure, to my right (the guy who did ALL the talking probably didn't get it), we could hear that people were talking but not what they said.
all together, a great experience.
the nick? $215 for two plus a hefty tip.-COLLAPSE

»Terrific Restaurant Week Lunch at Gotham Bar and Grill

My husband and I dined there yesterday and left full and well contented. We both started with green salads (his with mushrooms, mine with blue cheese and poached pears) that were exquisite. The pears were a tad to sweet, but the greens were outstanding.

My entre of fresh pasta Bolognese was delicious and very filling. My husband thought his hangar steak and potato dish fine, but nothing special, so I was happy with my choice. The other entre, salmon, looked a bit predictable as well.

For dessert I of course chose the rich buttery chocolate cake with amazing mint ice cream with chocolate crumbs. The ice cream was my favorite item from the whole meal: it has the taste of fresh mint leaves, and you could see bits of leaves mixed in.

We left very pleased and with the feeling that we might like to come back for a special dinner sometime.-COLLAPSE
