good to know

The personable owners, Allison and her husband Michael, are generous to the extreme with samples. There are a few Australian baked goods. .

Recommended: Fried chicken sandwich, Fried chicken salad, chicken pot pie, soup, potato salad, lammingtons, sticky date pudding, strawberry shortcake, scones, pies, cookies, slushie

Misses (to some): Banana bread.

Fried chicken sandwich: It has fried tender white meat, cabbage slaw with excellent olive oil on a soft ACME torpedo roll. This beauty is practically football-sized. The oil-and-vinegar slaw adds bright flavor, rendering mayo etc. utterly unnecessary, and includes bell pepper, red onion and parsley in addition to cabbage. The chicken breast is thinly cut with an ultra crispy crust, and seasoned with some black pepper and probably some cayenne or something giving it a bit of a kick.

Be warned- multiple recent reports indicate that the fried chicken sandwich has gone downhill. The baked goods are still excellent:

Fried chicken salad: Fulton chicken breast is butterflied and fried with a crispy batter, and served over house-made coleslaw. Not on the menu but will be made on request.

Chicken Pot Pie: Light buttery, but not oily pastry crust, nice bite size chunks of white and dark meat chicken (mostly light), celery, carrots, onions etc. Savory, but not overly salty. There is only enough soup to fill in the spaces between the ingrediants Super convenient, the directions are stickered right on the box it came in. From a frozen state, pre-heat and pop it right in the over at 350degrees and put the timer on for 1.5 hours

Potato salad: The skin-on red potatoes are cooked to the perfect texture liberally sprinkled with chopped parsley and mixed with the mustard based dressing. What makes it SOOO good is the light touch with the dressing. Just enough for flavor but not enough to call attention to itself. Little slivers of red onion for accent. . The key to Betty’s potato salad (and her egg salad) is that super peppery olive oil she uses

Strawberry shortcake: The macerated strawberries are full of flavor, the scone-like biscuit absorbed the juices without getting soggy and the whipped cream, not at all sweet and almost like crème fraiche, is the perfect pairing with the berries and biscuit.

Lamingtons: Two of the lightest pieces of sponge cake, with a layer of thin raspberry jam and the thinnest chocolate coating covered with coconut.

Sticky date pudding (for about 4-6): It comes in a tin with a separate container of caramel suace. You heat the pudding (really, kind of a moist cake) in the oven, and then drizzle the caramel sauce over it. Pretty darn
tasty.

Ginger cookie. One of the best ,chewy, not too gingery and it has a bit of a zing to it.

Apricot almond scone; tangy and crumbly. The balance of the almond/apricot of sweet/salty/almondy is amazing.
Cranberry scone: Has a nice tender crumb, also moist and had a lot of cranberries.mildly sweet with a lot of zing from the multitude of cranberries
Rhubarb scone: It’s huge and cakey.

Chocolate cupcake: It is intensely chocolaty devils food cake that is moist and light. A dollop of very smooth, ganache-like BITTERSWEET chocolate buttercream on top gives the cupcake an adult edge.

Lemon squares: A shortbread crust with an intense lemon flavor topping and a little puckery tartness.

Banana bread: It has lots of cinnamon sugar on top, but the banana bread itself is not that special. More like a banana cake, not much banana taste.

They don’t make the breads with nuts because of all the people allergic to nuts. A few pastries can be on the sweet side for some

Slushie: It’s like the best Slurpee you’ve ever had in your life. Betty is a genius with lemon. The flavor of real fruit, with just enough sugar to make it great, but not so much as to distract from the flavors of the fruit. Such a great drink on a hot summer’s day. The strawberry slushy, when she has, it is good too. The watermelon slushy was the only loser so far. It had a bitter undertone that was unpleasant

No tables but there are a few chairs and stools. Sandwiches sell out early.
