But as luck would have it, the birthday party I attended on Friday started here with cocktails, so I got a nice taste of the Farallon happy hour. We had four seats at the bar and the latecomers stood behind us. There are also some small tables. My place was set with a black fabric mat, a black cloth napkin, heavy flatware, a selection of breads, and a hunk of sweet butter sprinkled with red salt.

I had the Hemingway daiquiri. Not as sweet as you'd think something this pink would be. Made with rum, fresh lime juice, fresh pink grapefruit juice, maraschino cherry juice, and some simple syrup. Nicely balanced, refreshing and fruity but not excessively sweet.

The Little Gem lettuce salad with green goddess dressing, citrus, and shredded hearts of palms was nice. The dressing is a bit heavy for such delicate greens, but it's painted on the bottom of the plate, so you can incorporate as little or as much as you like.

In the awesome-we-want-more-orders category, the steamed clams with chorizo were huge, plump and sweet. The bartender happily refilled our bread plates after we'd used up the toasted levain to catch every single drop of the delectable juices.

Didn't try them, but heard the fries and the croquettes were good. I don't recall seeing duck gizzards on friday's menu.
