My late mother-in-law, Suzanne Wilson, always made these at christmas time. She said the name is because “it’s what you serve when the Bishop comes to tea.” She wasn’t British, but, like me, was an Anglophile, and a great cook.
Excellent toasted, if they get stale, but mine never lasts that long. My husband and I can easily polish off 1 loaf in an evening. Great with a hot cup of tea or coffee, or even a glass of milk!
If you don’t want to use marashino cherries, you can substitute dried cranberries or cherries.

This recipe for Chocolate Cherry Trifle is based on my family’s love of Black Forest Cake. Using fudgey brownies as a base, instead of cake, gives the trifle a decadent quality. There is a lot of flexibility for the busy cook. You can make the brownies, cherries and pudding the day before serving and assemble everything ahead of time or at the last minute.

The dough and frosting will also chill happily in the fridge until you have time to bake another batch.

This is his approach, but he encourages everyone to experiment with the spices you may like. Boris’s pumpkin pie is a bit spicy, so if you think you might like something more tame, drop the pepper and the citrus peels.

I tinkered with a simple apple dessert recipe to come up with this crumble, adding walnuts, cookie crumbs, spices and yummy spiked whipped cream. Easy to prepare, it tastes and smells like heaven. For a child-friendly version, omit the rum from the whipped cream and increase the vanilla to 1 teaspoon. Either way it is the perfect holiday treat!

Holiday Desserts need to fulfill a few requirements for me! First, the ingredients must be found in the grocery store down the street. (Searching hours for a gourmet ingredient isn’t on my holiday list!) Second, the ingredients need a long shelf life so I can whip up a showy dessert when friends drop by unannounced. Third, a make-ahead is a plus, and of course quick and easy. Fourth, it gets points for being nutritious. Plus, our household doesn’t want too rich, gooey, sweet or heavy after a Holiday dinner. And lastly, unique in flavor and texture so that guests respond with “Mmmmmmmm, this is wonderful…I like the…” With Blueberry Vanilla-Nutmeg Pudding Crisp, every guest finds their own treasure: a hint of orange, the fond memory of nutmeg, a nut lovers crunchy paradise, or the gourmet wondering why they hadn’t added a crunchy crisp to pudding. No matter what their treasure is, my treasure has been to develop an easy recipe that fulfills all my Holiday Dessert requirements along with delighting my palate and tummy! Enjoy!

    <introduction>

My husband loves the combination of chocolate and mint, and I wanted to make him a special dessert that featured these two flavors. I’ve put frosting on brownies in the past to dress them up a bit, and I thought that topping brownies with a peppermint buttercream would be delicious. Deciding to cover the buttercream with a fudgy chocolate frosting took the dessert to another level and reminded me a lot of peppermint patties. My husband loved the brownies and has requested them many times since I first made them almost four years ago. I usually bake the brownies in a 9×9 pan, but for a more formal presentation, I use a 9-inch springform pan and cut the brownie into wedges. The decadent richness, peppermint flavor, and attractive appearance of the torte (with the contrasting layers of fudgy brownie, creamy white buttercream, and chocolate frosting) make it a wonderful dessert for the holidays; sprinkling finely crushed candy canes on top of the chocolate frosting adds another festive element.

I made these for a Christmas party last year and they were a huge hit, despite being extremely rich and over-the-top. The cookies are super moist and dark with hunks of bittersweet chocolate and the peppermint buttercream with bits of crushed candy cane in it makes for an awesome cookie sandwich treat.

    <introduction>

One night my husband and I were eating a sweet potato casserole with dinner. My husband said “You know what would be good? Sweet potato squares. You know, like lemon squares, but sweet potato.” I’m kind of famous for my lemon squares, so I immediately saw the potential. After a little experimenting, I came up with these. Everyone who has tried them has absolutely loved them, and I’ve never seen anything else quite like them.
