Tater Tot Pita Sandwich Recipe
Like most college students, we were often short on cash, and therefore, short on food. On one drunken night, we hit the jackpot. The contents of our refrigerator were: Tater Tots, American Cheese, and Pita Bread…. what would you do in a situation like this? TATER TOT SANDWICH.
A STAR WAS BORN!
We’ve carried the recipe well beyond our college years and it’s a staple at most of our tailgates.
- Tater Tots
- American Cheese
- Pita Bread
- Yellow Mustard
- Bread and Butter Pickle Chips
- Cook the tater tots in either a deep fryer or on a grill.
- Cut the cheese in slices and the pit bread in halves.
- Place a couple slices of cheese in each pita half.
- Place a handful of tater tots in each pita half-6-10 tater tots depending on the size of the tots and the size of the pita.
- Add mustard and serve! Bread and Butter pickles are optional. Other condiments may be added, but best to keep it classic!

Thank you all for your support! Some may say this isn't a recipe, but that's up to interpretation. The BLT was a runner-up winner, that recipe also called for putting prepared products on prepared bread. Thanks Chow for giving me the opportunity to showcase this masterpiece.
This is not a recipe. Come on people, is American cooking so pathetic that anyone really considers putting prepared potato product on prepared bread a recipe? Do you also consider a PB&J a recipe?
I cant believe this is back. CHOW has lost all respect, I will not buy KC Masterpiece products ever again.
How on earth did a deep fried potato on pita get reinstated? especially when it was clear they were using suspicious behaviour to jump their votes with ridiculous numbers. CHOW,along with the sponsors of the competition, you have lost all credibility as a genuine, honest, food sharing/recipe blog. Seriously lamentable. Is Tater Tot a member of the Chow staff?
Divalicias, we appreciate all suggestions for variations. We've tried many, but unlike the Star Wars movies... we like to keep it original. Nonetheless, experiment as you may. The tater tot sandwich is for the people!
I just had to vote for this -- it's so ridiculous and ironic. I'm going to make a variation of this with ramen noodles on hot dog buns. With a BBQ Sauce drizzle and Miracle Whip schmear. Booyah!
Love it.
The votes for this recipe are a scam. 1000 + in a day? Please.
This recipe got over 2600 votes in less than 24 hours??? No frickin way this is right! CHOW needs to investigate this so-called contest! We're talking frozen potatoes on pita bread, come on!
fazemon, have you checked the BIG SCORE SLIDERS numbers, which have equal increases and they don't have any twitter or facebook posts. It's not that hard to get hundreds of votes when you people have thousands of facebook friends and twitter followers.
yes, dadcooks2, this tater tot pita has gotten over 400 votes in the 45 minutes I have been looking at this site, something definetly aint kosher here.....facebook, my tater tot....
What a joke of a "receipe", shoulda kept this one to yourself
DADCOOKS2, social media. If at least a few friends post a link to vote on their respective Facebook, Twitter, and Google+ pages, you can get over 500 votes in an hour.
HOW DO YOU GET 500 VOTES IN ONE HOUR?????SOMETHING IS FISHY NOT POTATO HERE....
Love the idea. We did it an added bacon. Nuff said.
LAWLS 4-20
jeanmarieok, not only is it not impossible, we do it all the time. All you need is a deep fryer or a grill... any true tailgate has at least one!
It would be impossible to serve this at a true tailgate party.
I love tater tots as much as anyone. Cheese on tater tots sounds good. You lost me with the pita, though. Pita bread with something as starchy as potatoes on top just doesn't jive.
UMMMMMMMMMM lookin good!!
This is basically a posh version of a good old chip buttie.
Looks good, unhealthy, but good. I can't eat the bread so I'd plate it by tossing or dusting the tots with some dry mustard and then topping with cheese. Or the tots could be topped with a welsh rarebit style sauce including cheese and mustard.
I'm guessing this is one of those recipes that's "so wrong, that it's right." What the hell, I'll try it...
I mean 16yrs of perfection :) but it may as well be 26yrs!
Kitchen Queen, 26yrs of perfection and never an unsatisfied customer. Please try it before commenting. I'm sure it can even give your chicken pot pie a run for its money!
gross! Tater tots maybe but the rest of it???
And the Food TV-ification continues...
baby food?
This here is a very good reason to give up drinking.
This is the most heavenly thing ever. I prefer the "Mexican" style cheese.
DADCOOKS2, don't knock it 'till you tried it!
YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING...HOW DISGUSTING IS THIS?
Chris, you're forgetting about the Seafood Jalapeno Explosion! Free your mind... and the rest will follow.
Mother of god, what is happening here? First Root Beer pulled pork now this? Bleh.
I'd do this in a minute. But would lose the mustard.
