All-American KC Pig Buns Recipe
When you asked for a tailgating game day recipe, I immediately thought of pig-skin and that made me think of ham and a little gem of a sandwich in my recipe box. I’ve re-incarnated the decades-old original recipe many ways to fit the trends and appetites of the day and the results are always the same. The beauty of this sandwich is you can assemble a big batch weeks in advance and freeze them. They keep very well made a day ahead and refrigerated as well. You can bake a hundred in your oven or as many as will fit on your grill. They keep well in a moderately warm place like an insulated container. They are terrific for a small crowd or a ginormous one. This is my special edition version with KC Masterpiece sauce for the CHOW contest.
- 6 tablespoons of mayonnaise
- 6 tablespoons of KC Masterpiece Original Kansas City Sauce
- 1/2 cup of minced onion
- 16 slices of baked ham; approximately 1/2 pound or as desired
- 8 slices of American cheese
- 8 sturdy hamburger/sandwich buns
- Heat oven to 400 degrees or an outdoor grill to 350 degrees.
- In a bowl, combine the mayonnaise, KC Masterpiece Sauce, and onions. Spread on the cut sides of the buns.
- Divide the ham and cheese slices and place on each bun.
- Wrap the buns twice in sheets of foil.
- Bake in the oven directly on the rack for 15 minutes. If using an outdoor grill, bake for 15 minutes, rotating half through or until the sandwiches are hot and toasted. If starting with frozen sandwiches, bake for 30 minutes. Serve wrapped in foil.
