Basic Asian Broiled Tofu Recipe

Basic Asian Broiled Tofu
Difficulty: Easy | Total Time: 40 mins | Makes: 2 to 3 servings

Everyday Asian ingredients like soy sauce, rice vinegar, and sesame oil transform simple tofu and carrots into a flavorful and healthy vegetarian meal.

INGREDIENTS
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon vegetable oil
  • Freshly ground black pepper
  • 1/2 pound medium carrots, peeled, cut in half lengthwise, then in half again widthwise
  • 14 ounces firm or extra-firm tofu, sliced into 1-inch-by-2-inch rectangles
  • 1 green onion, sliced thinly on the bias
  • 1 teaspoon rice vinegar
  • 1/4 teaspoon toasted sesame oil
  • Steamed white or brown rice, for serving
INSTRUCTIONS
  1. Heat the broiler to high and arrange a rack in the top third of the oven. Cover a baking sheet with foil; set aside.
  2. Whisk the soy sauce, vegetable oil, and a pinch of pepper in a medium shallow bowl to combine. Dip the carrots and tofu pieces into the soy sauce mixture to coat (let the excess sauce drip off and back into the bowl), then lay the pieces on the baking sheet so they are not touching. Set the remaining sauce aside.
  3. Broil the carrots and tofu until browned on all sides, about 20 minutes total, turning the tofu every 5 minutes to brown on four sides and flipping the carrots after 10 minutes. Remove from the oven.
  4. Add the green onion, rice vinegar, and sesame oil to the reserved sauce and stir to combine. Add the broiled carrots and tofu to the sauce and toss to coat. Serve with steamed rice.

Made a different sauce: 2 tablespoon soy sauce, 1/2 teaspoon Korean chili paste (for punch) and 1tablespoon fish sauce. No oil. Served over chopped lettuce and tomato. Delicious! Will certainly make again.

This sounds great. I'm going to try it with Ponzu and serve over a bed of quinoa.

@soupdujour okay, so the first time you made a recipe it didn't turn out the way you liked...try making it again and changing it to improve to your taste. That's part of the fun of cooking - not just following recipes like they're some sort of gospel. This recipe is a point of departure. This is a fairly basic recipe, a good one to have in your arsenal, great for on the go protein infusion! You can make a bunch on the weekend and add to any veggie dish you make during the week instead of meat. My improvement is to marinate the tofu overnight in a ziplock back, shaking it up once in a while. In addition to the soy sauce and rice vinegar, I'll often add some cumin, some hot sauce, etc.

I make this all the time, great on a weekday when I'm running around, I just start the rice before going to the store. If you end up using up your marinade before whisking in the rest of the sauce, either try shaking out tofu and carrots over the marinade -or- whip up a little more. Try using broccoli instead of carrots. Delicious!

This is not good. I made it tonight and followed the directions exactly. It is dry and lacks flavor. After dipping the carrots and then the tofu in the sauce, I had no sauce left with which to make step 4. Will not make this again.

  • Delicious. I doubled the soy, vegetable oil, and pepper. Great way to make an easy, delicious, and nutritious meal quickly after work.
