Makes:1 dozen dyed eggs
When Easter rolls around, don’t miss out on the egg-dying fun. Decorate your eggs in red, blue, green, or whatever color sparks your fancy. Use a clear or white crayon to draw on them before dipping them in the dye.
12 white eggs
2 teaspoons distilled white vinegar
About 40 drops (1/2 teaspoon) food coloring
Crayons (preferably clear or white ones) or stickers, for decorating (optional)
Place a rack over a paper-towel-lined baking sheet; set aside.
Place eggs in a single layer in a large saucepan with a tightfitting lid. Add enough water to cover the eggs by 1 to 2 inches. Bring to a boil over high heat. Remove from heat, cover, and let sit for 10 minutes. Using a slotted spoon, carefully remove eggs to the rack and let sit until cool enough to handle.
Pour 1 cup water into a small, nonreactive bowl or mug. Add vinegar and food coloring and stir to combine. For a darker color, add a few more drops of food coloring. Repeat for additional colors.
If desired, decorate cooled eggs with crayons or stickers.
Using a spoon, dip each egg into the dye, turning to coat evenly. Remove to the rack to dry.
