Widow's Kiss Recipe
John Gertsen, bar manager of Drink in Boston, gave us this recipe. With not one, but two warming herbal liqueurs, this cocktail is spicy and sweet, but it’s balanced out with a dash of bitters.
What to buy: Bénédictine D.O.M., a golden liqueur first produced by Benedictine monks in the 16th century, adds a sweet, aromatic flavor to cocktails. It can be found at well-stocked liquor stores.
This recipe was featured as part of our New Year’s Eve Speakeasy Party.
- 1 1/2 ounces apple brandy, such as Calvados
- 3/4 ounce Yellow Chartreuse
- 3/4 ounce Bénédictine D.O.M.
- 2 dashes angostura bitters
The intro implies that this is a modern cocktail from Drink. Just to clarify, it is a vintage cocktail from roughly 1890, created by George Kappeler, Holland House bar, Manhattan, NY.

Ick.
Sound like a way to ruin a perfectly good glass of Calvados.
But I never did like Benedictine.
