Classic BLT Sandwich Recipe

Classic BLT Sandwich
Difficulty: Easy | Makes: 1 sandwich

A near-perfect balance of sweet, smoky, crusty, and salty, the BLT is what food dreams are made of. If only it were healthy to eat bacon and mayo on a daily basis.

This recipe was featured as part of our Tomatoes! recipe gallery.

INSTRUCTIONS
Toast 2 slices of thick-cut sourdough or wheat sandwich bread. Spread 1 piece with 1 tablespoon of mayonnaise, then layer on a few thick-cut tomato slices and sprinkle with kosher or sea salt and freshly ground black pepper. Top with a couple of slices of crisped bacon and a large piece of leaf lettuce. Close with the other piece of bread, slice in half, and serve.

Why would one add salt to a sandwich that has bacon as it's main ingredient ? Miracle Whip over Mayonaise ?

@ eatdallas - They did that a while back....and told us that we were doing it wrong at that!

Just a thought - I think the order of layering is important so that you avoid a soggy sandwich. Lettuce on the bottom, then tomato, and finslly the bacon is what works best for me. Also I grill the bread if possible - I like the slightly charred taste.

  • Like a video on here showed, toasting the bread in the bacon grease makes a BLT next level, for flavour as well as heart attacks.

But come on, recipes like this make me think chow might become like food networks recipes.

  • I need a recipe for this?

    Chow...ur letting me down!

  • What's the target audience for these instructions on how to build a sandwich? Surely it's not aimed at chowhounds.

  • This is a TBL, not a BLT! Heresy!

  • oh, THAT is what the T stands for. been looking for this recipe forever.

  • @banjoman - I have to agree . . . and what's interesting in reading the comments is that this is not the first time they have posted this recipe! I wonder if there are folks who google for BLT recipes . . . and did you see that there's a video???

  • Thank god they gave us a recipe! I had no idea how to make a BLT before I read this!

  • Actually it's the bread, not the bacon and mayo, that makes this unhealthy. Wrap this up in lettuce and go to town!

  • A tablespoon seems like way too much mayo (the sandwich pictured is literally awash in the stuff). I like to apply just a thin layer on each slice of bread instead. And the bacon is salty enough; no need to add extra salt just for the tomatoes.

  • If you're counting calories, have your BLT with the bacon, lettuce, tomato and mayo on the side!

  • I actually use good peppered turkey bacon, and avocado--when I make this on a regular basis. I save the full fat bacon for a treat!

  • Adding Avocado really turns it up another diminsion. But its hard to beat the Classic style.

  • LOL @ Jim M's comment =)

For a fat free, low calorie sandwhich, just eat the lettuce and tomato portion =P

One of my favorites, the BLT at T-Burger in Monrovia serves them up with plenty of densely layered lettuce and mayo with crunchy bacon. It's my quick, guilty, comfort food.

  • sub spicy mustard for mayo, imho.

  • Once in a while, some avocado slices makes it even better. I guess you'd call that a BLAT instead of BLT.

  • For a 50 percent reduction in fat and calories, eat half.

  • Just give it a tiny skim of mayo, omit the salt, render the bacon and it is practically spa food!!
