Friendly’s Peanut Butter Sauce Recipe
For all of you trying to find the best Peanut Butter Sundae Sauce EVER!!!! Here you go. I tried the recipe with the water base (in my search for this sauce peanut butter craving) and it did not come close at all. I did my own lab test and this one comes closest to tasting just like Friendly’s Restaurant.
This does not make very much if you want some for leftovers…so double or triple the recipe. You might want to cut down on the sugar if the peanut butter is sweet to start with…I did not fully fill the 1/4 cup and it was still plenty sweet! Most of the recipes asked you to add the peanut butter to the heat mixture, but when I did that…it took the grainy texture and color away. It turned it dark and paste like.
ENJOY!!!!
P.S. serving amount depends on how much you want to share… ;)
- 1/2 cup heavy whipping cream ( you can use half and half)
- 1/4 cup sugar ( I used 3 tablespoon)
- 1/4 cup light Karo syrup
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 1 teaspoon vanilla ( I used 1/8 teaspoon)
- 1/2 cup creamy peanut butter
- Combine all ingredients (except peanut butter) in a saucepan stirring constantly until all ingredients are dissolved.
- Let the mixture cool completely then add the peanut butter and stir well.
- It will look like a mess, but keep stirring and it will turn out smooth and still have the grain texture…just like Friendly’s!

Made this today and it is to die for. I am glad I doubled the recipe!
I used an organic peanut butter that is softer than regular (almost pourable when not refrigerated) so it was not very thick. I added about 1/3 cup more peanut butter and it did thicken as it cooled.
It was a tad bit sweeter than the tasters in my house liked, so I also added a sprinkle of salt.
We have a local ice cream parlor who has this awesome peanut butter sauce on their sundaes. I asked a young man how they made this and he unknowingly devulged a secret. Add slightly softened (in a microwave for a few seconds only!)peanut butter to carmel sauce and stir well. Wow is it ever delicious! I like it very peanut buttery so I add quite a bit, but start off with about a 1/4 to a 1/2 cup of peanut butter to a cup of carmel sauce. We use Richardson's.
so if you dissolve ALL of the ingredients.... what do you have left to mix the peanut butter in??? LOL sorry had to point that out haha.
Just found your recipe today and will file it to try. I love Friendly's peanut butter sauce!
LadyintheKitchen: it's served over ice cream to make a sundae. My favorite way is with both peanut butter sauce and hot fudge. Oh, and whipped cream (DUH!). :)
Oh how I love peanut butter! But I really dont understand what the peanut butter sauce would be used for.
