Difficulty: Medium | Total Time: 55 | Active Time: | Makes: 1 loaf, 10 servings

Irish Soda Bread is a dense quick bread that uses baking soda for leavening, rather than yeast, making it a quick and easy recipe to bake at home. Various recipes for soda bread are popular throughout Ireland, but American versions of Irish Soda Bread traditionally include California raisins, which add a scrumptious sweetness and also help to keep the soda bread moist.

INGREDIENTS
  • 3 cups flour
  • 1/3 cup sugar
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 3/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 3/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1/4 cup melted butter
  • 1 egg
  • 1 cup California Raisins
INSTRUCTIONS
  1. Preheat oven to 350°F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Stir together flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda and salt in a large bowl.
  3. Stir in buttermilk, butter and egg until well mixed; stir in raisins.
  4. Knead several times on a lightly floured board then shape into a ball.
  5. Place on prepared baking sheet and flatten slightly.
  6. Cut a small x in the top and bake for 50 to 55 minutes or until a sharp knife inserted in the center comes out clean.

  • Irish Soda Bread Recipe
    3

@ "Samsooni", I just came across your post now & if you want I will send you an authentic Irish Soda Bread recipe, sometimes referred to as Brown Bread over in Ireland. BTW there's no kneading involved either.I'm originally from Ireland and although the above tastes good I would consider the recipe more like a tea/raisin cake... Just my two cents.

  • Try dry cranberries or dates

  • I'm sorry about all my posts. My computer was working so slowly that I kept pressing the submit button. Lesson learned.

  • I really like soda bread. Yeast kind of frightens me. I'm still working on my kneading technique. But until then, irish soda bread fulfills any cravings for bread. It says that you have to knead several times in the recipe, but not as much as a yeast dough right? I hate kneading. I don't really like raisins, got any creative suggestions?

  • Are there any problems with doubling this recipe?
