Sweet Potato and Squash Baby Food Recipe

Sweet Potato and Squash Baby Food
Difficulty: Easy | Total Time: 20 mins | Active Time: | Makes: 2 1/2 cups

Sweeter vegetables like squash and sweet potatoes can be introduced into your baby’s diet at around 6 months. Here we combine both in a mild purée that’s a favorite of our associate food editor’s daughter.

Game plan: To reheat the baby food, let it thaw completely in the refrigerator, then heat in the microwave or on the stovetop. Stir well before serving.

This recipe was featured as part of our Make Your Own Baby Food story.

INGREDIENTS
  • 2 cups sweet potato, peeled and cut into large dice (about 1/2 pound)
  • 1 cup butternut squash, peeled and cut into large dice (about 6 ounces)
INSTRUCTIONS
  1. Combine vegetables in a large saucepan and cover with 2 inches of water. Bring to a boil over high heat, then reduce heat to medium low and simmer until vegetables are fork tender, about 6 minutes.
  2. Remove vegetables with a slotted spoon, reserving cooking liquid, and place in a blender. Add 1 cup of the cooking liquid and blend until mixture is smooth. Let cool slightly, then divide into 1/4-cup portions, place in airtight containers, and refrigerate up to 5 days or freeze up to 6 weeks until ready to use.

  • There is, that's true, like, for instance, Earth's Best. However, (and I like EBs), their fruits/veggies are a lot more water than what I make at home. My little guy can eat 2.5 of the 4oz jars of EB but is happy with about 3oz of my chicken-sweet potato-broccoli mix, or even just the pear-sauce I make.

Anyway, bit of a digression...and I do agree with Shazam that there's lots of great choices out there w/o sugar/salt!
Still, it's kinda fun to cook for baby. After all, you can introduce him/her to spices like cardamom, turmeric, ginger, cinnamon, cumin, etc. In theory, our little guy won't be as limited in what he eats as his dad...but we'll see!-COLLAPSE

  • What are you talking about? There's plenty of jarred baby food available without salt and sugar.

  • I support anything that gets people to give babies less-processed foods. Bravo.

Down with the salt and sugar laden stuff that comes in the little jars.

  • I like to roast sweet potatoes or butternut squash because I hate peeling them. Then they are really soft and I can just mush some up for baby. (and I can eat them myself)
