Bloody Caesar Recipe

By
Bloody Caesar
Difficulty: Easy | Total Time: Under 5 mins | Active Time: | Makes: 1 drink

Created back in 1969 by Walter Chell of the Owl’s Nest Bar in Calgary, Alberta, this Canadian version of a classic hangover cure uses Clamato juice. Like a Bloody Mary, garnishes can include just about anything you want, from celery stalks to prawns.

What to buy: Clamato is a spicy tomato drink spiked with clam juice. Look for it in the juice aisle of the grocery store.

We opted for a pickled green bean garnish for this drink. The Mean Beans by Rick’s Picks have good crunch and a nice bite.

This recipe was featured as part of both our Drinks Around the World story and our Tailgating Recipes photo gallery.

INGREDIENTS
  • 2 ounces vodka
  • 3 ounces Clamato juice
  • 1/4 teaspoon horseradish
  • 3 to 5 dashes hot sauce
  • 3 dashes Worcestershire sauce
  • Ice
  • Pickled green beans, for garnish (optional)
  • Lemon wedge, for garnish (optional)
INSTRUCTIONS
Combine all ingredients except ice and garnishes in a shaker, fill with ice, shake vigorously, and pour into an 8-ounce glass. If desired, garnish with pickled green beans and a lemon wedge.

  • What a totally amazing cocktail, absolutely good anytime of the year!!

  • Great stuff, clamato is also tasty in beer for a red-eye (also good for hangovers).
BTW your Canadian friends will simply know this as a Caesar (unless they're British decent)

  • a friend of mine has made these for years and i LOVED them; however, she wouldn't tell me the 'secret' ingredient of clamato b/c she knew i wouldn't even try it. finally, she filled me in and i was truly surprised! also, she uses peppar vodka! yummy! also, re: the garnishes, a local watering hole has a bloody mary buffet on sundays that has every imaginable garnish, including salami, shrimp,...+READ

  • Also good made with tequlia

  • @ Shattered Try it with horseradish. You'll be glad you did.

  • Shattered - You're right on the money and you're makin' me want a Caesar right now!

  • So many things to clear up here, from a Canadian:

    1. Whiskey?! Are you out of your mind? Never, ever heard of such a thing, and I've been in every province.

    2. It's just a Caesar. Order it in a resto when drinks are ordered or in a bar, and there's no confusion with salad or whatever at all.

    3. Beans? WTF? That's another new one. The garnish is a celery stalk and usually a slice of lime.

    4. Glass is rimmed with celery salt, after being wet with lemon juice.

    5. Horseradish is rarely added, but I won't say it's never done like whiskey or beans because it at least fits with the tabasco sauce.-COLLAPSE

  • Love Bloody Caesars- lived in Ont/BC 5 years in the late 70'searly 80's 1st exp and a fav---def lemon, Sp piquillo peppers or celery good too- salted/celery seed rim---lemon pepper is great too-Agree with wilbroni. I never heard of CC in a Caesar. Anyway- I like reg Clamato and it's bit lighter and sweeter than a Mary mix.

  • Hmm, never heard of that one, and I lived in Canada (Ontario) for over 30 years. We always made it with vodka. What part of Canada are you talking about?

  • i love that you posted this recipe and all the interest that followed but there is something very wrong with it. While the positive and negative interest in the Clamato is great the Cesar as it is enjoyed in Canada is made with Canadian Whiskey not vodka. Just thought everyone should know this.

  • When I was a younger man while in Key West, a bartender asked if I was Canadian when I ordered a Bloody Caesar - I was very surprised - he told me Americans didn't know of this cocktail. To answer some of the posts - a Caesar is more orange than a Bloody Mary, and not as thick. I've had arguments with friends in their 20's who only call it a "Caesar" - they had never heard of the "Bloody" part (that's how language changes I guess!). They also call "sweaters" what I would call a "sweatshirt". That said - this is my absulute favourite (notice the "u") summer cocktail - so enjoy, southern neighbours (again the "u"). Thanks also to Chow.com - great site.-COLLAPSE

  • Hey, you're lucky they didn't bring you a salad! That has happened!

  • Don't knock it till you've tried it. "Clam nectar?" IN A DRINK?? yeah, doesn't sound tasty at all but this is THE MOST POPULAR COCKTAIL in canada. It just tastes like a tangier version of a bloody mary. Beats a mary anyday. I only realized it was Canadian when was in my 20's. I was in Philly and asked for a Caesar and the bartender looked at me like I was crazy. "a bloody caesar". "you mean a bloody mary, son?" "no a caesar... mott's clamato, vodka, you know". "Mott's makes APPLE JUICE, son!" It was not a winnable situation. Anyway, I've seen Clamato sold a few places in the States. Boston for one. And now I'm in Seattle and have seen it in stores. And yes, in Canada it comes in a spicy version. Otherwise spice it up real good yourself.-COLLAPSE

  • It's definitely called a "Bloody Caesar", because it's so much like the standard "Bloody Mary". Motts makes Clamato Juice in regular and spicy. I lived in Canada for many years and this was a favorite. The clamato is not as thick as regular tomato juice either, and it is a lighter red color. I have seen clamato juice on the grocery shelves here in Ft Myers lately (maybe because so many snowbirds...+READ

  • I never knew it was Canadian until some people from the U.S. came to my bar asking if there was Caesar salad dressing in the drink. That Caesar needs some fresh ground pepper and a celery salt rim, though. And maybe another splash of Clamato.

  • Barf

  • hah i saw this on CBC The National a couple nights ago! It's getting quite a bit of attention lately

  • I don't think I've ever seen it called a Bloody Caesar, simply a Caesar. Also, fabulous with gin instead of vodka.

  • It should be red not orange. Is this just the picture? Also in Canada you can buy spicy Clamato juice.

  • easy rcianci.....santa's watching!!

  • Clamato is Clam broth + tomato juice. It is not spicy. Do your research.

  • I've never thought of Clamato as spicy.

  • Sounds delicious!!!
