	<li>Preheat broiler.</li>
		<li>In a 1&frac12;-quart saucepan, simmer the cream, bay leaf, parsley, onion, thyme, marjoram, and peppercorns for 15 minutes. Strain.</li>
		<li>In a 1-quart saucepan, heat the ham in the butter and add the cream. Reduce to 1 cup. Line the pie shell with asparagus spears. Pour on just enough sauce to cover the asparagus. Stir the cheese into the remaining sauce and pour on top. Sprinkle with bread crumbs and dot generously with butter. Glaze under the broiler.</li>
		<li>Do not assemble and glaze until shortly before serving. You can substitute fennel, spinach, broccoli, or snow peas for the asparagus.</li>
