  • Arrange the smoked salmon in the center of a platter around the cream cheese. Arrange the bagels around the outside edge and scatter the onion slices over all. Serve black pepper on the side.
  • Guests construct their own open-faced sandwich by spreading the bagel with cream cheese, topping it with slices of smoked salmon and onion, and sprinkling liberally with freshly ground black pepper.
  • The platter can be prepared the night before except for the bagels. Toast bagels just before serving.
