Mccann's steel cut oats preparation (if you buy bulk) Recipe
By mudaba
Difficulty: Easy |
It bugs me that I can never figure out how much water I’m supposed to use since I always buy these oats in bulk and have no back-of-the-can recipe.
INGREDIENTS
- 1 cup McCann's steel cut oats
- 4 1/4 cups water
- vanilla
- some salt
- dried fruit
INSTRUCTIONS
- I’m not sure if the water needs to be boiling when you put the oats in and can find no definitive recipe online (it all seems to be microwave and shortcut tips). But I’ll keep looking and write it in when I find it.
- OK This is from the back of Mccann’s can: Into 4 cups of briskly boiling water sprinkle one cup of oatmeal, stirring well. When the porridge is smooth and beginning to thicken, reduce heat and simmer for 30 minutes, stirring occasionally. To ensure characteristic rich nutty flavor, avoid overcooking.

Omg!....people seem to make this soooo complicated. It's not like baking a cake, it's just oats.
1.) Fill a pan enough where the water will cover the oats plus a couple of inches above the oats (you can ALWAYS add more or pour off if the water is too little or too much, it's just OATS). Bring the water to a rolling boil....
2.) THEN All you need to do is get regular size breakfast cereal bowl...+READ

2.) THEN All you need to do is get regular size breakfast cereal bowl and fill it about 3\4 ways full with the uncooked steel cut oats. (this will make enough oats for you to eat every morning for the next 5 days).
3.) Turn the stove down to the lowest setting, stir the oats a couple of times and let sit for anywhere from 10 to20 minutes. NOT 6-8 hours! If you want mush, just cook rolled oats. The whole idea behind steel cooked oats is the great nutty taste and chewy texture. It's NOT raw fish or pork, it's OATS. Heck I eat organic steel oats every morning. My cholesterol and triglycerides are perfect now and I have actually lost weight without even trying. All I have done is eat a bowl of organic steel cut oats every morning. Instead of butter, I add a tablespoon of organic olive oil and 3 tablespoons of organic flax seed and a touch of salt. It keep me really full for hours and I love the taste. I have rolled oats, I LOVE organic steel cut oats. I get them for .99 cents a pound at our local organic food store.
I just don't get it why people want to cook these for hours on end, there is no need. Soaking them for a few hours is ok, but all this talk about slow cookers and stuff...?????-COLLAPSE
Try replacing part of the water with a mix of low-fat milk & buttermilk. Also, I toast the oats in butter in the pan before adding the liquid. YUMMY!
Okay, well think of this as a longcut. I purchase President's Choice steel cut oats, and on the side of the tin it says to add a 1/2 cup of oats to 2 1/4 cups of water, with a dash of salt and cook accordingly. I would do that, if I ever had time in the morning. Instead, I add the same measurements to my crockpot the night before, and leave it on the "keep warm" setting until morning. It's...+READ
