Toasted Pound Cake with Coffee Sauce Recipe
Coffee breath can be a deal-breaker, but if you’re single or have someone who loves you blindly then you can indulge in this dessert, which combines toasty, buttery bites of Vanilla Bean Pound Cake with a sweet Coffee Sauce. It’s so good you’ll be willing to risk coffee-breath exile.
Game plan: For a slacker solution, substitute high-quality store-bought pound cake and caramel sauce, and whisk some coffee-flavored liqueur or strong espresso into the latter.

- Vanilla Bean Pound Cake, cut into large dice
- Coffee Sauce
- Heat the broiler to low and arrange the rack in the upper third. Scatter pound cake cubes on a baking sheet and place under the broiler until golden brown, turning cubes occasionally so they brown evenly, about 7 minutes.
- Serve with toothpicks to dip cake into coffee sauce.
This is a great recipe that can be a little simpler and healthier by replacing the instant espresso and butter in the coffee sauce by using a couple of teaspoons of Coffee-Extra Virgin Olive Oil. This is a coffee flavoured extra virgin olive oil using the Arbequina olive and the oil from the arabica coffee bean. Sounds odd, but I fell in love with the taste - and I don;t even drink coffee! It's worth a try - available at selected fine food shops and online. Great recipe!
Made this for guests, late Sunday morning stand-around and chat kind of visit. Overall, went over pretty well. Served with a cheese ball / crackers, and fruit platter.
Couple of cautions: Don't look away for a minute while broiling the cake - it can go from raw to burnt very quickly. And the coffee sauce is a bit finicky too - I poured the hot ingredients into the cold (probably should have done the reverse), and got a glumpy mess that would not whisk together. I was able to save it by microwaving it for a minute or two.
