Zapatos Nuevos Recipe

Zapatos Nuevos
Difficulty: Easy | Total Time: | Makes: 2 servings

This blended summer drink was given to us by Tres Restaurant (formerly known as Tres Agaves). It comes together in only a few minutes and can easily be doubled or tripled to serve a crowd. Just blend tequila, watermelon, lime juice, and agave nectar and pour over ice. A basil leaf garnish adds a bit of fragrant spice.

INGREDIENTS
  • Ice
  • 4 ounces blanco tequila
  • 1 ounce agave nectar
  • 2 cups watermelon cubes (1 inch square)
  • 1 ounce freshly squeezed lime juice
  • 2 basil leaves, for garnish
INSTRUCTIONS
  1. Fill 2 tall glasses with ice and set aside.
  2. Place all of the measured ingredients in a blender and blend until smooth. Pour into the prepared glasses and garnish with the basil leaves.

  • Fructose DOES have a surprisingly lower glycemic index than sucrose. So yes, a fructose molecule joined to a glucose molecule makes up a sucrose molecule, but that is really a separate issue from how your body responds to those foods. That's kind of like saying cellulose is just a bunch of glucose molecules attached to each other. And yet it's indigestible by humans. That you think it's bunkum seems, unfortunately, a departure from fact.

That said, you're completely right about simple syrup. It won't change the flavor of the drink by much, it's easier to source, and cheaper. Simple syrup tastes sweeter though so I'd pull the ratio back a bit.

  • I found this similar recipe in a magazine this summer. I made them weekly (by the jug). Living on a golf course, this allowed me to always has something for drop-by quests. I used vodka; too many people don't like tequila.

    Watermelon Mint Cooler

18 ounces watermelon juice (4 cups seedless watermelon chunks/1 pound)
    12 ounces lemonade
    Juice of 1 lime (optional)
¼ to ½ cup fresh mint leaves – put in blender with watermelon (optional but do add flavor)
    ½ cup vodka or tequila

Puree the watermelon; strain retaining juice.
Mix: watermelon juice, lemonade, mint and liquor. Chill and serve over ice.

  • I think the stuff about agave necter's affect on blood sugar levels is bunkum. It is simply fructose, which is half of sucrose (table sugar). As for the taste of agave necter, it is perhaps a little "cleaner" (lighter) tasting, but not enough to warrant the extreme prices people are charging for the stuff. It isn't like using an artisanal honey or something. Simple syrup would be fine.

  • Agave nectar is supposed to have a less deleterious effect on our blood sugar levels. It does have a taste that differs from simple syrup so you'd have to decide if the agave taste is worth the extra money; if we've knocking back watermelon juice and tequila, the blood sugar issue is obviously way far down on our list of concerns.

  • Agave nectar might be pricier than necessary, but it does have a flavor that's quite distinct from simple syrup (imho). I think a little honey mixed into the simple syrup would be a closer substitution.

  • I made this drink for a party this summer. It was excellent! I used the agave nectar but cut back on the amount used. I would try the simple syrup next time.
I used a juicer to get the watermelonm juice - kind of a pain but worth it!

  • This IS delicious!

  • I do essentially the same drink with rum and simple syrup and it is very, very tasty. In fact I just got a tough fruit/carrot juicer so I can juice watermelon more efficiently. I think the whole agave nectar thing is just plain silly. It's just expensive simple syrup from an agave.

  • This looks DELICIOUS!
