Paloma Recipe

Paloma
Difficulty: Easy | Total Time: Under 5 mins | Active Time: | Makes: 1 drink

For a change of pace from the everyday margarita, try the Paloma, which is like a margarita with bubbles. This drink from the general manager of Chicago’s Salud Tequila Lounge lets the sweetness of the tequila take center stage.

What to buy: Any 100 percent agave reposado tequila will do the trick.

A grapefruit soda like Squirt would work well in this cocktail.

This recipe was featured as part of both our Cinco de Mayo cocktail menu and our Tailgating Recipes photo gallery.

  • Juice of 1/2 medium lime

Thanks for giving me a name for my usual. I just called it my "Happy, Happy Hour" being my 3 favorites combined.

  • I was about to say, isn't the original with jarritos, a Mexican brand from the state of Jalisco, where Tequila is made?

  • Grapefruit Fizzie Lizzie!!!! all the way

  • Fresca is the classic middle-brow mix for this drink.

Aim a little higher by using the previously noted Izzie, or my favorite: Ting.

  • I say go high-end with the concept... a little fresh-squeezed red grapefruit juice, fresh-squeezed key lime juice, Gran Centenario Rosangel (reposado tequila rested in port barrels and infused with hibiscus flowers), and some champagne to top. Skip the ice; serve it in a chilled flute glass, perhaps alongside a Mexican brunch.

  • Grapefruit Izzie!

  • For the Canadian's out there - President's Choice has a grapefruit soda that works really well. I mixed a little chili with salt and rimmed the glass with it..... it's the prefect BBQ drink!

  • Hey Aidia and the Chow team - just a thought:
If you used Fizz brand grapefruit soda to make the drink pictured, why don't you call for it in the recipe? Or at least give us a hint about how to do what you actually did.
Useful content is always more appreciated than useless or inaccurate.

  • Made these tonight using Blue Sky (real sugar) grapefruit soda and some standard El Jimador blanco. I used almost double the lime-- poured over ice in a highball, it was the perfect cocktail on a hot day, and a great accompaniment to some homemade tacos.

  • Squirt, Fresca, or the Jarritos, but must be grapefruit to be a paloma.Try adding just a squirt of orange and some salt, then serve it in a jarrito(little Mexican jar). This is way more popular than margaritas in Mexico.

  • Ting is great! My father came back from Brazil raving about it when I was a kid, and I surprised him with a few bottles of it that I found at Central Market in Austin when he came to visit. Very tasty, tart and sweet. I think that would probably work best, if you can find it.

  • This might work well with Izze brand Sparkling Grapefruit juice.

  • I used exactly that ruby red grape fruit juice and club soda. It worked great! Well, I thought it tasted great. I garnished with a slice of fresh lime and mint. It was awesome.

  • I love grapefruit but I'm not a big fan of grapefruit soda. Do you think a 50/50 mix of ruby red grapefruit juice and club soda would work?

  • I recommend using Ting. It's a fantastic grapefruit soda, and comes in green or pink.

  • I thought it was a great recipe.

    Thanks!

  • I'm not loving this - probably due to my use of jose cuervo which was in the cabinet. But also the squirt is too sweet and it makes me long for a more margarita-like experience. Perhaps fresca would be better.

  • my friends came back from a mexican wedding a couple months ago and tasted these for the first time. they came home and whipped up a tasty batch for my bday brunch. however, their south-of-the-border authentic version is:
    3-5 second pour of Tequila
    Fill 80% with Squirt
    Fill 20% with mineral water

  • yes, bmwchef, we used Fizz pink grapefruit soda. it's not too sweet and has a nice color.

  • I like adding the powder version of Tajin to this. Tajin is a mix of dry chile, lime, and salt-look it up.

  • The pink color comes from the grapefruit soda they were using. I think its Fizz brand, correct me if i am wrong.

  • I thought Squirt was the color of Mountain Dew. What gives it that pink color??

  • This is my favorite simple summer cocktail. If you can't find Squirt, you can also use Fresca or grapefruit/toronja-flavored Jarritos. Sometimes I rub a little salt around the rim of the glass, too.
